Write a balanced comparison in Korean: 보다, 에 비해 and 반면에
Compare two fictional courses in Korean, distinguish session length from weekly study time, and write conclusions that stay within the evidence.
Decide what is being compared before choosing the grammar
“Course B is shorter” sounds straightforward until you notice that its sessions happen more often. A shorter session can coexist with more teaching time per week. A useful Korean comparison names the measure, keeps the baseline clear, and avoids turning one advantage into a claim that everything is better.
This advanced practice lesson uses familiar comparison forms for a more demanding reading-and-writing task. The forms themselves are not all advanced grammar. You should already read connected Korean and recognise the difference between a verb and a descriptive predicate before using the modifier patterns below.
You will compare two fictional courses, explain their trade-offs, and finish with a recommendation tied to a stated priority. The figures are invented for this lesson. They are not prices, schedules, reviews or recommendations for real schools.
Keep the comparison unit visible
| Measure | Garam: 가람 수업 | Nuri: 누리 수업 |
|---|---|---|
| Format | In person | Online |
| Length of one session | 60 minutes | 45 minutes |
| Sessions per week | 2 | 3 |
| Total session time per week | 120 minutes (60 × 2) | 135 minutes (45 × 3) |
| Round-trip travel per visit | 40 minutes | No travel required in this example |
Both totals count scheduled session time only. They exclude preparation, homework and breaks. Garam’s travel adds 80 minutes across two visits if the same 40-minute round trip applies to each visit. Nuri has 15 more scheduled teaching minutes per week, despite each session being 15 minutes shorter.
Do not mix those units. “Fifteen minutes shorter” describes one session here; it cannot describe Nuri’s weekly total. Likewise, a comparison of classroom minutes alone does not include commuting. If you choose a broader measure, define what you add before drawing a conclusion.
Useful labels are 한 번에, “per session / each time” in this context; 일주일에, “per week”; 수업 시간, “class time”; and 이동 시간, “travel time.” Keep the relevant label near the number so your reader does not have to guess which measure you mean.
Use 보다 to name the baseline
누리 수업은 한 번에 사십오 분이라서 가람 수업보다 짧아요. — “A Nuri session is forty-five minutes, so it is shorter than a Garam session.” The noun before 보다 supplies the comparison baseline. In this use, 보다 is a particle meaning “than”; it is not the dictionary verb 보다, “to see.”
For a precise difference, write 누리 수업은 한 번에 가람 수업보다 십오 분 더 짧아요. — “Each Nuri session is fifteen minutes shorter than a Garam session.” 십오 분 gives the size of the difference. 더 reinforces the comparison, but 보다 does not require 더 in every sentence: 짧아요 can already state that something is shorter relative to the named baseline.
Reverse the baseline and the predicate must change with the facts: 가람 수업은 한 번에 누리 수업보다 십오 분 더 길어요. — “Each Garam session is fifteen minutes longer than a Nuri session.” Simply swapping the course names while keeping 짧아요 would reverse the meaning incorrectly.
Words such as 훨씬, “much,” add a judgment about the size of a difference. When your source gives exact minutes, reporting the difference is often clearer than making the reader guess what you count as “much.”
Use 에 비해 to frame the comparison
가람 수업에 비해 누리 수업은 한 번의 수업 시간이 짧아요. — “Compared with Garam, Nuri has a shorter session length.” The expression 에 비해 follows the baseline noun. 에 비해서 is also used; the shorter 에 비해 is common.
Keep the noun phrase complete: 가람 수업에 비해 makes sense as “compared with the Garam course.” It still needs a following statement telling the reader what the comparison shows. Avoid a sentence that says only “Compared with Garam” and leaves the measure unstated.
The expression sets up a comparison; it does not by itself explain a cause. Nuri’s sessions are shorter than Garam’s. That does not mean the existence of Garam caused Nuri to choose a shorter schedule. For explaining reasons separately, see Korean reasons and results.
You need not alternate 보다 and 에 비해 just to avoid repeating a word. Choose a form that keeps the baseline easy to follow. In a compact factual sentence, 보다 may be enough; 에 비해 can make the comparison frame explicit at the beginning of a longer sentence.
Use 반면에 for a contrasting aspect
| Predicate type | Before 반면에 | Example fragment |
|---|---|---|
| Action verb, present description | Verb stem + 는; drop final ㄹ when needed | 시간이 걸리는 반면에 |
| Descriptive predicate with a final consonant | Stem + 은 | 수업 시간이 짧은 반면에 |
| Descriptive predicate without a final consonant | Stem + ㄴ | 시간이 비슷한 반면에 |
| Descriptive predicate ending in ㄹ | Drop ㄹ, then add ㄴ | 수업 시간이 긴 반면에 |
| 있다 / 없다 | 있는 / 없는 | 이동 시간이 없는 반면에 |
누리 수업은 한 번의 수업 시간이 짧은 반면에 일주일에 세 번 수업을 해요. — “Nuri’s individual sessions are shorter, whereas it has classes three times a week.” The contrast is between shorter sessions and a higher frequency than Garam’s two sessions. The table supplies that shared background.
짧다 is a descriptive predicate, so use 짧은 반면에 here, not 짧는 반면에. 길다 gives 긴 반면에: the final ㄹ drops before ㄴ. With the action verb 걸리다, use 걸리는 반면에. These examples describe a present schedule; do not turn this table into a rule for every past or future context.
가람 수업은 이동 시간이 필요한 반면에 누리 수업은 온라인으로 진행돼요. — “Garam requires travel time, whereas Nuri takes place online.” The two clauses have different course subjects. 반면에 can also contrast two aspects of the same subject, as in the shorter-session example.
Use an actual contrast your reader can identify. “The course is convenient, whereas it is convenient to attend” does not offer a useful opposing aspect. If you are simply adding another benefit, use a suitable additive connection or a separate sentence instead of inserting 반면에 to make the writing sound formal.
Read a comparison that preserves the limits
Read the English meaning and reasoning notes
Compared with Garam, Nuri has shorter individual sessions. However, because it runs three times a week, its weekly class time is actually longer. Garam requires travel time, whereas Nuri can be taken from home. Therefore, Nuri may be more suitable for a learner who wants to reduce travel time. However, this timetable alone does not let us judge which course produces better learning outcomes.
The passage uses plain written endings such as 짧다 and 없다. These fit an explanatory paragraph; they are not a recommendation to address an unfamiliar teacher casually. The recommendation is qualified with 수 있다, and the final sentence states a limit on what the data can establish.
주당 means “per week.” 오히려 signals a result that contrasts with the impression created by the shorter sessions. 더 적합할 수 있다 says “may be more suitable,” with a particular learner goal. It does not announce a universal winner.
The final sentence separates a known schedule from an unknown outcome. More minutes can be relevant to a learner’s choice, but this table contains no assessment results, teacher feedback, homework information or evidence of learning gains. A balanced comparison should not manufacture those missing facts.
Build your own four-sentence comparison
- Name one measure and state a checked difference.
- Add a contrasting aspect, keeping the comparison baseline clear.
- Relate a preference to a specific learner priority.
- State one important question the table cannot answer.
For example, a learner who wants fewer scheduled meetings has a reason to consider Garam’s two weekly sessions. A learner who needs to avoid commuting has a reason to consider Nuri. Neither preference proves that one course teaches better. Do not invent a school review to make the conclusion sound persuasive.
Before reading your paragraph aloud, underline every comparative claim and write its unit in the margin. Circle each use of “better,” “more suitable,” or “effective,” then check whether you gave a criterion or evidence. This catches reasoning errors that correct grammar alone would miss.
Check the facts and the forms together
- Which course has the shorter individual session, and by how many minutes?
- Which has more scheduled class time per week, and by how many minutes?
- In 가람 수업보다 짧아요, which course is the comparison baseline?
- Complete the form: 짧다 → ___ 반면에; 길다 → ___ 반면에.
- Does 에 비해 by itself mean that the baseline caused the difference?
- Why is “Nuri has shorter sessions, so it has fewer class minutes per week” wrong for this table?
- Give one learner priority for which Nuri may fit better and one for which Garam may fit better.
- The timetable says Nuri has more weekly class minutes. Can you conclude that its students learn more effectively? Write a suitable limit in English or Korean.
Check the answers and explanations
- Nuri: 45 minutes versus 60, a difference of 15 minutes per session.
- Nuri: 135 minutes versus 120, a difference of 15 minutes per week. The weekly frequency changes the calculation.
- Garam. 보다 follows the noun naming what the other item is being compared with.
- 짧은 반면에; 긴 반면에. 짧다 takes 은, while 길다 loses ㄹ before ㄴ.
- No. It frames a comparison. A causal explanation requires separate support and appropriate wording.
- It ignores frequency. Nuri meets three times per week, producing 135 minutes despite its shorter sessions.
- Nuri may fit avoiding travel; Garam may fit having fewer weekly meetings. These are preferences tied to particular constraints, not proof of teaching quality.
- No. The table has no learning-outcome evidence. For example: “This timetable alone cannot establish which course is more effective.” Korean: 이 시간표만으로 학습 효과를 판단할 수 없다.
A small listening check
Pronunciation help: Keep the measure attached to the comparison
Listen for both 짧은 and 더 많아요. They describe different measures, so one short adjective cannot summarise the entire schedule.
Listen and choose
Play the sound, then select the Korean you heard. The answer buttons unlock after playback. This is one short practice item, not a pronunciation assessment.
Listen before choosing.
