Korean convenience store phrases: bags, receipts and heating food

Respond to checkout questions, ask about a promotion, and confirm what a clerk will heat or include.

Intermediate18–22 min · checkout role-playExplained in English

A yes at the checkout needs a clear object

A clerk asks 필요하세요? while holding a bag near the counter. You answer 네, but then see chopsticks beside the bag. Which item did you accept? Context may be enough, but one noun prevents a small mistake.

This intermediate lesson focuses on checkout language rather than a “must-buy” product list. You will answer bag and receipt questions, request heating, read a simple promotion label and confirm the items included.

Store equipment, bag charges, promotions, product eligibility and available utensils vary. Every product, price and promotion in the dialogue is fictional. Read the shelf label and ask the clerk in that store.

Attach the noun to yes or no

봉투 필요하세요?Bag: do you need one?
영수증 드릴까요?Receipt: shall I give you one?
데워 드릴까요?Heating: shall I heat it for you?
젓가락 필요하세요?Chopsticks: do you need them?
Reply with the item when more than one question is possible.

필요하세요? asks whether something is needed. 드릴까요? offers an action for the customer. The missing noun is often visible, but a learner can keep it explicit.

Useful answers include 봉투는 필요 없어요, 영수증은 주세요 and 네, 이 도시락은 데워 주세요. The topic marker 은/는 contrasts one checkout decision with another.

Keep the bag and receipt as separate choices

Clerk or customerMeaningClear reply
봉투 필요하세요?Do you need a bag?아니요, 봉투는 필요 없어요.
봉투는 유료예요.The bag has a charge.그럼 괜찮아요.
영수증 드릴까요?Shall I give you the receipt?네, 영수증 주세요.
영수증은 버려 주세요.Please throw away the receipt.네, 알겠습니다.

유료 means that a charge applies. This lesson does not state a nationwide price or that every bag at every store is charged the same way. Ask 봉투는 얼마예요? if the amount is not displayed.

그럼 괜찮아요 can mean “Then I’m okay without it” in context, but the exact object is safer for a learner: 그럼 봉투는 필요 없어요.

Name the item before asking for heat

KoreanMeaningDecision
이 도시락 데워 주세요.Please heat this lunchbox meal. The customer requests heating.
이건 데우지 마세요.Please do not heat this. The customer excludes one item.
몇 분 데워요?How many minutes should I heat it?The customer asks for a duration.
여기서 먹을 거예요.I am going to eat it here.A plan, not a heating request

Only heat a product according to its packaging and the store’s instructions. Korean language does not tell you whether a container is microwave-safe. When several items are on the counter, point and use 이거 or name 도시락, while keeping hot and unheated items separate.

데우다 means to warm or heat. The clerk’s offer 데워 드릴까요? uses 드리다 to present the service toward the customer. Your request uses 데워 주세요.

Treat 1+1 as a label that still needs a condition check

QuestionMeaningWhy ask
이 상품도 행사 상품이에요?Is this product also part of the promotion?Confirm the exact item.
같은 상품으로 가져와야 해요?Do I need to bring the same product?Confirm the pairing condition.
하나 더 가져오면 돼요?Should I bring one more?Confirm the next action.
행사는 언제까지예요?Until when is the promotion?Confirm the period shown by the store.

A 1+1 label presents a promotional quantity, but the exact eligibility can depend on brand, size, flavour, membership or period. Do not infer that any two nearby products form a pair.

행사 상품 means a promotional item in this context. The question with 도 asks whether this item is included as well. The clerk’s answer or shelf label supplies the actual condition.

Confirm what will be placed in the bag

KoreanMeaningPotential ambiguity
빨대 하나 주세요.Please give me one straw.Quantity is explicit.
젓가락은 두 개 주세요.Please give me two pairs/sets of chopsticks. The requested count is explicit.
숟가락도 들어 있어요?Is a spoon included too?The customer asks about contents.
소스는 따로 넣어 주세요.Please put the sauce in separately.Separation is explicit.

Availability and whether an item is automatically included vary. Ask instead of taking a question like 필요하세요? as proof that every utensil is free or stocked.

들어 있어요? asks whether something is included or inside. 따로 asks for separation. These details are useful when several packaged items look similar.

Resolve a promotion, heating and bag choice

SpeakerKoreanMeaning
Customer이 음료도 원 플러스 원이에요?Is this drink also buy-one-get-one?
Clerk네, 같은 음료 하나 더 가져오세요.Yes, please bring one more of the same drink.
Customer이 도시락은 데워 주세요. 음료는 봉투에 넣어 주세요.Please heat this lunchbox meal. Please put the drinks in a bag.
Clerk젓가락 필요하세요?Do you need chopsticks?
Customer네, 젓가락 하나 주세요. 영수증도 주세요.Yes, please give me one set of chopsticks. Please give me the receipt too.
Clerk도시락은 데우고 음료 두 개는 봉투에 넣을게요.I’ll heat the lunchbox meal and put the two drinks in a bag.
Customer네, 맞아요.Yes, that is right.

The clerk confirms three separate outcomes: one heated meal, two drinks and a bag. The customer’s 네 answers that complete summary rather than an isolated checkout question.

The fictional promotion has been defined by the clerk as one more of the same drink. Another store or label may use different eligible products, so keep the question in the real transaction.

Name the object in every checkout decision

  1. Answer 봉투 필요하세요? so it is clear that you do not need a bag.
  2. The bag has a charge, but no amount is shown. What should you ask?
  3. Ask the clerk to heat this lunchbox meal but not the other item.
  4. Explain the difference between 데워 드릴까요? and 데워 주세요.
  5. A shelf says 1+1. What condition should you confirm before choosing a second item?
  6. Ask whether a spoon is included.
  7. In the dialogue, which item is heated and which items go in the bag?
  8. Write a checkout reply requesting one set of chopsticks and a receipt.
Check the answers and explanations
  1. 아니요, 봉투는 필요 없어요. The noun makes the refusal clear.
  2. 봉투는 얼마예요? The answer should come from the displayed or current store price.
  3. 이 도시락은 데워 주세요. 이건 데우지 마세요. Point clearly so 이건 has one referent.
  4. 데워 드릴까요? is the clerk’s offer to provide the service. 데워 주세요 is the customer’s request.
  5. Confirm whether the exact size/flavour or same product is eligible, for example 같은 상품으로 가져와야 해요?.
  6. 숟가락도 들어 있어요? It asks whether a spoon is included as well.
  7. The lunchbox meal is heated. Two drinks are placed in the bag.
  8. 젓가락 하나 주세요. 영수증도 주세요. Each requested item is named.

Role-play with four cards: bag, receipt, heating and utensil. The clerk changes one answer or promotion condition. The customer must restate the final transaction instead of repeating 네 four times.

A small listening check

Pronunciation help: Track the object before each action

The same nouns and actions appear in both choices, but their roles are reversed. 도시락 is heated; 음료 두 개 go in the bag.

Listen and choose

Play the sound, then select the Korean you heard. The answer buttons unlock after playback. This is one short practice item, not a pronunciation assessment.

Listen before choosing.
