TOPIK I exam preparation guide: build a listening and reading study plan
Use an official practice interface, diagnose listening and reading errors, and turn the results into a realistic four-week preparation loop.
Prepare for the task you will actually take
TOPIK I preparation should begin with the current official notice and a sample of the actual delivery format, not a memorised list of old dates or question counts. Registration periods, test locations, fees and available formats can differ by administration and country.
This intermediate guide builds a study loop for the listening and reading skills shown in the official TOPIK I practice environment. It does not reproduce protected test questions, predict a score or guarantee a level. Check the National Institute for International Education’s TOPIK site and your local administering institution before making travel or payment decisions.
A small practice set can tell you more about what to study next than a long list of topics. Perhaps you recognize the words but miss a negative in the recording, or understand a passage once you have more time. This guide helps you turn those observations into a manageable study plan. The four-week example is flexible, so it can fit the time you actually have before your test.
Make a test-facts card from current official information
| Fact to verify | Where to verify it | Why an old blog post is insufficient |
|---|---|---|
| Registration window | Current TOPIK or local institution notice | Dates and procedures change |
| PBT or IBT availability | Notice for the chosen session and location | The interface and logistics differ |
| Identification and arrival instructions | Admission ticket and official candidate notice | Requirements can be administration-specific |
| Test sections and timing | Current official guide or practice interface | Do not train to an outdated layout |
| Result date and score report access | Current official announcement | Release procedures can change |
Write the source URL and the date you checked it. If an official notice is temporarily unavailable, contact the listed administration instead of copying a date from an unofficial summary.
The official TOPIK I IBT tutorial currently presents listening practice, mouse-based answer selection and a separate reading/answer-review flow. Use it to learn the interface only if it matches the format named on your own test notice.
Run a small diagnostic before buying more materials
- Choose one official or lawfully provided TOPIK I sample that you have not memorised.
- Complete a short listening set and reading set under quiet, timed conditions.
- Mark confidence before checking: sure, unsure or guessed.
- Check the answer and record the reason for every wrong or guessed item.
- Choose one repeated weakness for the next three sessions.
A correct guess is still useful evidence. If you chose an answer because one familiar word appeared, record that strategy even when the option happened to be correct.
| Error label | What happened | Next practice |
|---|---|---|
| sound boundary | Could not separate words in the audio | Short dictation and replay |
| key detail | Missed time, place, number or negation | Listen for one information type |
| vocabulary | Unknown word blocked the sentence | Learn the word in its full phrase |
| grammar role | Misread particle or ending | Compare two minimal sentences |
| text structure | Could not find purpose or sequence | Underline connectors and topic sentence |
| time pressure | Could solve it later but not in time | Use a shorter timed set |
Do not label every miss “vocabulary.” The next study action depends on the cause. A known word heard too late is a processing problem, not automatically a missing-word problem.
Train listening in three passes
Pass 1 — answer the task: listen once and choose without pausing. Pass 2 — locate the evidence: listen again, if your study material permits it, and note the exact contrast that supports the answer. Pass 3 — rebuild: use a transcript after answering, mark one missed boundary and repeat a short line slowly.
| Signal | Question to ask | Example contrast |
|---|---|---|
| 안 / 못 | Is the action absent or impossible? | goes · does not go |
| 전 / 후 | Is it before or after? | before class · after class |
| 몇 시 / 어디 | Which detail is requested? | time · place |
| 그런데 / 그래서 | Does the direction change or give a result? | contrast · result |
| speaker intention | What will the speaker do next? | request · plan · refusal |
Our page audio offers 0.6× and 0.8× for learning. An official test recording may not give that control. Use slower playback to discover a sound pattern, then return to the permitted one-pass condition for the diagnostic.
Read the question before hunting familiar words
First identify what the item asks: a matching detail, a blank, a sequence, a main idea or a purpose. Then read the whole sentence or short text. A word shared by the passage and an option is not enough evidence if the relationship is reversed or negated.
| Reading move | Visible action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Mark the task | Circle “same,” “different,” “main idea” or the blank | Prevents solving the wrong question |
| Find the predicate | Underline the final verb or adjective | Shows the central event or state |
| Track connectors | Box 그런데, 그래서, 먼저, 다음 | Reveals direction and order |
| Check reference | Link omitted or repeated people/things | Prevents a false subject |
| Eliminate with evidence | Write one reason beside each rejected option | Reduces word-matching guesses |
When a sentence is slow, do not translate every word into polished English. Write a role map—who, what, when, result—and answer the Korean task.
Build vocabulary from functions, not a giant alphabetic list
| Function group | Useful content | One retrieval prompt |
|---|---|---|
| daily actions | 가다 · 오다 · 먹다 · 기다리다 | What happens next? |
| places and transport | 학교 · 병원 · 역 · 버스 | Where is the event? |
| time and sequence | 아침 · 먼저 · 다음 · 아직 | When or in what order? |
| requests and plans | -아/어 주세요 · -(으)ㄹ 거예요 | What does the speaker want? |
| description and comparison | 더 · 가장 · 비슷하다 · 다르다 | What relation is tested? |
Save the complete phrase that caused the error. For example, learn 아직 안 왔어요 rather than only 아직. On the next day, hide the meaning and recall the phrase from a small scenario.
Retire cards that are consistently easy and replace them with evidence from current practice. A large card count is not proof that the listening or reading skill improved.
Use a four-week loop as a planning model
| Week | Main job | Evidence at the end |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Diagnose | One listening and one reading sample; classify errors | Top two error labels |
| 2. Repair | Three short sessions on the first weak skill | A new set with fewer same-type errors |
| 3. Integrate | Mixed listening/reading sets under time | Accuracy and confidence notes |
| 4. Rehearse | A format-matched practice and logistics check | Pacing plan plus verified test facts |
A 30-minute session can use five minutes of recall, fifteen minutes on one skill, five minutes checking evidence and five minutes updating the error log. If you have more time, add another focused block instead of turning one sitting into several hours of passive rereading.
Re-test with different items. Repeating the identical sample can measure memory of its answers rather than transfer to a new question.
Prepare logistics without turning them into universal rules
Several days before the test, re-open the official notice and admission information. Confirm the exact site, permitted identification, arrival instructions, format and equipment guidance. For an IBT session, use the official tutorial to become familiar with selecting and reviewing answers; for another format, follow that format’s current directions.
On practice day, rehearse one pacing rule: if an item is consuming too much time, mark your best supported choice and follow the review behavior permitted by the current interface. Do not rely on a review button unless you have verified it for your test.
Sleep, travel and food choices are personal and logistical matters. Plan them realistically, but do not treat a language blog as medical advice or an official candidate notice.
Turn scores into the next study action
- Why should you verify your TOPIK session before memorising dates or question counts?
- What three confidence labels does the diagnostic use?
- A learner knows every word but misses “not” in the audio. Which error label fits better than vocabulary?
- What is the purpose of the transcript in the three-pass listening routine?
- Why is a shared word between a passage and an option not sufficient evidence?
- Write one functional vocabulary card for 아직 안 왔어요.
- Why should the retest use different items?
- What should exist at the end of week four in the model plan?
Check the answers and explanations
- Administration, location, format, dates and procedures can change. Use the current official notice for the session you will actually take.
- Sure, unsure and guessed. A correct guess still enters the review log.
- Key detail or sound boundary, depending on why 안 was missed. Replay and inspect the exact evidence before choosing.
- After attempting the task, the transcript helps locate a missed boundary, ending or detail. It is not a substitute for first-pass listening.
- The option may reverse, negate or misassign the relationship. Read the full claim and locate supporting evidence.
- Front: “The person has not arrived yet.” Back: 아직 안 왔어요. plus a small arrival scenario.
- A repeated item can measure memory of that item. Different material tests whether the repaired skill transfers.
- A format-matched rehearsal, a pacing plan and a current verified facts card for the actual test session.
After checking these answers, choose only one error label and schedule the next three short sessions. A focused plan is useful even when your eventual test date is not yet fixed.
