Korean train ticket vocabulary: departure, car, seat and transfer

Read a Korean rail booking or ticket by separating station, date, time, train, car and seat, then confirm live changing details.

Read the ticket as separate fields

A train ticket can contain several numbers close together, but each one has a different job. The train number identifies the service, 호차 tells you the car, and 좌석 tells you the seat inside it. Once you can separate those fields, a Korean ticket becomes much less crowded.

This guide starts with the words for departure and arrival, then follows a short conversation about a seat. The ticket and numbers in the dialogue are fictional examples. For your own journey, the useful skill is recognizing which detail you need to ask about, rather than memorizing the example numbers.

Identify six ticket fields

출발 means departure and 도착 means arrival. Alongside station names, they show the direction of the journey; alongside times, they tell you which part of the journey the time refers to. 서울 출발, 부산 도착 is quite different from 부산 출발, 서울 도착, even though the same two cities appear.

승차권 is the train ticket. 호차 identifies the car or coach, while 좌석 identifies your place inside it. 사 호차 means Car 4, rather than Platform 4. 환승 is a transfer to another service. Keeping those labels separate helps when the ticket, a station sign, and a staff member each supply a different piece of information.

Ask one field at a time

Pattern or sentenceNatural meaningPoint to notice
서울에서 부산까지 가요.I am going from Seoul to Busan.에서 and 까지 mark endpoints
몇 호차예요?Which car is it?ask for the coach
좌석이 창가 쪽인가요?Is the seat on the window side?쪽 describes side
출발 시간이 변경됐나요?Has the departure time changed?verify a live update

서울에서 부산까지 가요 means ‘I am going from Seoul to Busan.’ 에서 marks the starting point here, and 까지 marks the destination. If your question concerns the coach instead, 몇 호차예요? is short and specific: ‘Which car is it?’

좌석이 창가 쪽인가요? asks whether the seat is on the window side. 쪽 means a side or direction, so 창가 쪽 helps distinguish it from the aisle side. 출발 시간이 변경됐나요? asks whether the departure time changed. You can choose the question that matches the field you need, rather than asking vaguely whether the entire ticket is correct.

Correct a seat misunderstanding

SpeakerKoreanMeaning
Traveler이 승차권은 몇 호차예요?Which car is this ticket for?
Staff사 호차입니다.It is Car 4.
Traveler좌석은 십이 에이 맞나요?Is the seat 12A?
Staff아니요. 십이 비입니다.No, it is 12B.
Traveler사 호차 십이 비, 맞죠?Car 4, seat 12B, correct?

The traveler first asks about the coach, then checks the seat. The staff member confirms 사 호차 but corrects 십이 에이 to 십이 비. Repeating 사 호차 십이 비, 맞죠? brings the corrected information together: Car 4, seat 12B, right?

Numbers paired with 호차 use Sino-Korean readings in this example: 사 호차 for Car 4. The seat combines the number 십이 with the letter 비. If a letter or number is hard to catch, pointing to the printed field or asking 다시 말씀해 주세요 gives the staff member a clear way to help.

Treat the display as the final operational check

The platform or boarding area is a separate detail from the coach. A sign saying 타는 곳 points you toward where to board; 호차 helps you find the correct part of the train. If you need the platform, 이 열차는 어디에서 타요? asks ‘Where do I board this train?’

For a transfer, 어디에서 갈아타요? asks where to change trains. 시간이 충분해요? asks whether there is enough time, although giving the actual two services makes that question more useful. Current departure, delay, and boarding information needs to be checked against your own ticket and the station display; this lesson focuses on the Korean used to ask.

Correct likely misunderstandings

호차를 platform으로 번역하기호차는 train carplatform is a separate field
도착만 확인하기출발과 도착을 함께 확인하기similar station names can cause a wrong direction
저장한 화면만 보기현재 전광판도 확인하기operations can change

The main mix-up is using the coach number as a platform number. 사 호차 identifies a car in the train, so it cannot answer where the train is boarding. A seat number is another separate field. The dialogue works because the traveler checks coach and seat individually before repeating them together.

Departure and arrival labels are easy to skim past when you recognize the city names. Reading 출발 and 도착 with the names keeps the direction clear. If a screen appears to show a different time, matching the train number first helps you avoid comparing your ticket with another service.

Try it in a familiar situation

A practice ticket shows 4호차 and 12B. What does each field identify? How would you confirm them aloud, and what would you ask to find the boarding place?

Read the explanation

4호차 is Car 4 and 12B is the seat inside that car. 사 호차 십이 비, 맞죠? checks both together. 이 열차는 어디에서 타요? asks where to board the train. The coach and seat do not provide a platform number.

A small listening check

Pronunciation help: Track car, seat and time field

Listen for 사 호차/십이 비/출발 versus 십이 호차/사 비/도착.

Play the sound, then select the Korean you heard. The answer buttons unlock after playback. This is one short practice item, not a pronunciation assessment.

Listen before choosing.
