Korean BBQ phrases: order portions, grill safely and ask before sharing
Order Korean barbecue portions, ask who grills, confirm doneness and request separate utensils without turning one restaurant style into a universal rule.
Order the right amount before asking for extras
At a Korean barbecue restaurant, a few clear questions help you settle in before the grill gets busy. You can order the meat and portions, ask who will do the grilling, and request help with an unfamiliar tool.
삼겹살 이 인분 주세요 orders two portions of pork belly. 이 고기는 직접 구워요? asks whether you grill this meat yourself. The restaurant may provide a different level of help from the last place you visited, so that short question is useful even when you already know the menu.
Learn the words used around the grill
| Korean | Working meaning | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| 삼겹살 이 인분 | two portions of pork belly | portion order |
| 불판 | grill plate | equipment |
| 집게 | tongs | shared tool |
| 쌈 | leaf wrap | serving option |
| 추가 주문 | additional order | later request |
| 다 익었어요? | Is it fully cooked? | ask staff rather than guess |
인분 counts servings. In 이 인분, 이 is the Sino-Korean number two; it does not mean “this.” In 이 고기, however, 이 does mean “this.” The word that follows tells you which reading fits.
불판 is the grill plate and 집게 are tongs. 쌈 is a wrap, often made by placing food in a leaf. 추가 주문 means an additional order, which you might make later once you know whether the first portions are enough.
Turn menu nouns into polite requests
| Pattern or sentence | Natural meaning | Point to notice |
|---|---|---|
| 삼겹살 이 인분 주세요. | Two portions of pork belly, please. | 인분 uses Sino-Korean numbers |
| 직원분이 구워 주세요? | Does a staff member grill it? | confirm service style |
| 집게를 따로 주세요. | Please give us separate tongs. | specific hygiene request |
| 이 고기는 다 익었어요? | Is this meat fully cooked? | ask about this item |
주세요 politely asks for something. Naming the item and quantity first helps the server check the order: 삼겹살 이 인분 주세요. For another item, you can keep 주세요 and change the noun.
직원분이 구워 주세요? asks whether a member of staff grills the meat. 집게를 따로 주세요 requests separate tongs. 따로 is the important detail: you are asking for a separate item rather than simply pointing out the tool already on the table.
Order, grill and share in one exchange
| Speaker | Korean | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Guest | 이 고기는 직접 구워요? | Do we grill this ourselves? |
| Staff | 네, 필요하시면 도와드릴게요. | Yes; I can help if needed. |
| Guest | 익었는지 확인해 주시겠어요? | Could you check whether it is cooked? |
| Staff | 네, 이쪽은 조금 더 익혀 주세요. | Yes; cook this side a little longer. |
The guest first asks whether the diners grill the meat themselves. The staff member answers yes and offers help if needed. The guest then asks the staff member to check whether the meat is cooked.
익었는지 확인해 주시겠어요? is a polite request for that check. The reply 이쪽은 조금 더 익혀 주세요 identifies a side that needs more cooking. The conversation is about getting help at the grill; it does not yet include an order or a request to share food.
Check the restaurant’s instructions before assuming
Cooking instructions depend on the meat and how the restaurant serves it. Asking staff for help is useful, but meat colour alone does not establish that it is safely cooked. Food-safety checks rely on the appropriate internal temperature.
When dining with other people, a small question can prevent a misunderstanding about shared food. Offering something and waiting for the answer is clearer than assuming everyone wants the same wrap or portion.
Correct likely misunderstandings
| Avoid | Use or check | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 일 인분을 한 인분으로 읽기 | 일 인분 | 인분 uses Sino-Korean numbers |
| 색만 보고 익음 판단 | 직원에게 확인 | appearance alone is not a universal safety check |
| 공용 집게로 everyone must share | 필요하면 따로 요청 | sharing preferences differ |
다 익었어요? asks whether something is fully cooked. It is different from 다 먹었어요?, which asks whether someone has finished eating. The verb carries the difference, even though both sentences start with 다.
The number of portions is an order quantity, not a promise that it will be enough for a particular group. If you are unsure, explain how many people are eating and ask the server about the portion size.
Try it in a familiar situation
Order two portions of pork belly, then ask whether you grill the meat yourself. If you want a separate pair of tongs, what word makes that request specific?
Read the explanation
삼겹살 이 인분 주세요 orders two portions. 이 고기는 직접 구워요? asks whether you grill it yourselves. 집게를 따로 주세요 asks for separate tongs; 따로 supplies the distinction.
