Korean colors and clothes: describe what someone is wearing

Use color modifiers and the right wearing verbs for shirts, trousers, shoes, hats and accessories in clear Korean descriptions.

Put the color directly before the clothing noun

When you are describing a lost bag or pointing out a shirt in a shop, a color and an item name can do a lot of work. 빨간 셔츠 means ‘a red shirt,’ and 파란 가방 means ‘a blue bag.’ You do not need a long sentence before the other person understands which item you mean.

The small challenge is that a color word can look different when it stands alone and when it comes before a noun. This lesson connects those forms with familiar clothes and bags, then adds the verbs used for wearing them. That gives you a description you can actually say, rather than a list of colors to memorize.

빨강 and 파랑 name the colors red and blue. Before an item name, the examples use 빨간 and 파란: 빨간 셔츠 and 파란 가방. The same idea appears in 노란 모자, 검은 바지, and 하얀 신발. Learning the whole phrase makes the noun-modifying form easier to remember.

You will also meet color names ending in 색, such as 초록색. 초록색 우산 means a green umbrella, and 파란색 가방 is another natural way to say a blue bag. In a shop, 파란색 있어요? can ask whether the item is available in blue when both speakers already know what you are talking about.

Match the wearing verb to the item

Pattern or sentenceNatural meaningPoint to notice
셔츠를 입어요.I wear/am wearing a shirt.입다 for clothing
신발을 신어요.I put on/wear shoes.신다 for footwear
모자를 써요.I put on/wear a hat.쓰다 for headwear
안경을 써요.I wear glasses.쓰다 also fits glasses

Korean uses different verbs for different things you wear. A shirt or trousers goes with 입다, shoes with 신다, and a hat or glasses with 쓰다. So 셔츠를 입어요, 신발을 신어요, and 모자를 써요 form useful pairs. 쓰다 has other meanings too, but the hat or glasses makes its meaning clear here.

For something a person is wearing right now, the -고 있어요 form is especially clear: 빨간 셔츠를 입고 있어요 means ‘They are wearing a red shirt,’ with the person understood from the conversation. Compare that with 빨간 셔츠를 자주 입어요, ‘I often wear a red shirt.’ 자주 makes the second sentence about a habit.

Identify a lost item precisely

SpeakerKoreanMeaning
A어떤 가방을 찾고 있어요?What kind of bag are you looking for?
B큰 파란 가방이에요.It is a large blue bag.
A검은 손잡이가 있어요?Does it have a black handle?
B네, 주머니도 두 개 있어요.Yes, and it has two pockets.

The lost-bag conversation starts with 어떤 가방을 찾고 있어요?, asking what kind of bag the person is looking for. 큰 파란 가방이에요 supplies two useful details together: large and blue. The next question checks a black handle, and the answer adds two pockets.

Notice that 검은 손잡이가 있어요? is about a feature the bag has, rather than something it wears. 있어요 works well for handles, pockets, or a mark on an item. 주머니도 두 개 있어요 adds another identifying feature; 도 means ‘also,’ and 두 개 counts the two pockets.

Add size and pattern after the basic color

Size and pattern can make a description more precise. 큰 검은 가방 is a large black bag, 작은 파란 가방 is a small blue bag, and 줄무늬 셔츠 is a striped shirt. A plain color may identify the item first, with a handle or pocket detail helping distinguish it from similar ones.

If two shades look close, pointing to the item keeps the conversation simple. 이 색 있어요? means ‘Do you have this color?’ You can then ask about the item itself: 이 셔츠는 큰 사이즈 있어요? asks whether this shirt comes in a large size. The shared context does some of the work for you.

빨강 셔츠빨간 셔츠use the noun-modifying color form
신발을 입어요신발을 신어요footwear takes 신다
모자를 입어요모자를 써요headwear takes 쓰다

빨강 셔츠 is an awkward combination in these examples because 빨강 is the color noun. 빨간 셔츠 or 빨간색 셔츠 gives you a natural description. Rather than changing every color mechanically, keep a few familiar combinations together: 검은 바지, 노란 모자, 하얀 신발.

The wearing verb also belongs with the item. 신발을 신어요 and 모자를 써요 are the ordinary combinations, even though English uses ‘wear’ for both. If you are describing a bag on a table, 있어요 may be more useful than any wearing verb: 책상 위에 파란 가방이 있어요 means there is a blue bag on the table.

Try it in a familiar situation

A friend is looking for a large blue bag with a black handle. How could you describe it? Then describe someone who is wearing a red shirt right now.

Read the explanation

큰 파란 가방에 검은 손잡이가 있어요 means the large blue bag has a black handle. 빨간 셔츠를 입고 있어요 describes someone wearing a red shirt now. If the item were shoes, the verb would change: 하얀 신발을 신고 있어요 describes wearing white shoes.
