Korean grammar comparison: -지만 vs -는데 for contrast and background

Compare -지만 with -는데, -은데 and -ㄴ데 so that the first clause signals the relationship you actually mean.

Intermediate20–25 min · sentence comparisonExplained in English

Two translations can hide two different sentence shapes

Both 비가 오지만 갈 거예요 and 비가 오는데 우산 있어요? may contain an English “but.” The first sets up an explicit contrast. The second gives rain as background for the question about an umbrella.

This intermediate lesson develops the user’s keyword “nuances of similar Korean grammar points” through one focused comparison: -지만 and -는데/-은데/-ㄴ데. You will form each connector, distinguish contrast from background and repair unfinished sentences that leave the listener guessing.

The goal is not to assign one English word to each ending. Read the relationship between the clauses and the conversational move that follows.

Start with the relationship between the clauses

A지만 BA and B stand in an explicit contrast.
A는데 BA provides background for B; contrast is one possibility.
A는데…A opens a context and leaves the next move unstated.
The English word “but” does not decide the Korean form for you.

-지만 presents the two clauses more evenly as opposing or unexpected facts. -는데 is a more neutral connector whose first clause often frames the second. Because background can differ from what follows, -는데 can also express contrast, but that is not its only job.

The official Korean teaching grammar describes the contrastive -는데 as weaker in opposition than -지만 and notes that an unfinished -는데 clause can leave several continuations open. Context and intonation decide what the speaker is inviting next.

Build the forms without treating every stem alike

Base-지만-는데 family
가다가지만가는데
먹다먹지만먹는데
좋다좋지만좋은데
크다크지만큰데
멀다멀지만먼데
학생이다학생이지만학생인데

For present-tense action verbs, attach -는데 to the stem: 가는데, 먹는데. Descriptive verbs use -은데 after most consonant stems and -ㄴ데 after vowel stems. A final ㄹ drops before -ㄴ데, so 멀다 becomes 먼데. 있다 and 없다 take 있는데 and 없는데.

-지만 is more uniform: 가지만, 먹지만, 좋지만. After a noun plus 이다, use 학생이지만. Past and prospective material can appear before -지만, as in 갔지만 and 가겠지만.

Use -지만 when you want the opposition to lead

KoreanWorking meaningContrast
방은 작지만 조용해요.The room is small, but quiet.Size versus a positive quality
연습했지만 아직 어려워요.I practised, but it is still difficult.Effort versus remaining difficulty
비싸지만 오래 쓸 수 있어요.It is expensive, but I can use it for a long time.Cost versus durability
가고 싶지만 시간이 없어요.I want to go, but I do not have time.Desire versus constraint

Each second clause is set against an expectation raised by the first. That makes -지만 useful when the contrast itself is the organising point.

Contrast is not automatically disagreement. 작지만 조용해요 can be a balanced description. The speaker’s evaluation depends on which facts matter in that decision.

Use -는데 when the first clause prepares the next move

KoreanNext moveWhy the first clause matters
비가 오는데 우산 있어요?QuestionRain explains why the speaker asks.
지금 회의 중인데 나중에 전화할게요.PlanThe meeting explains the delayed call.
이 근처에 사는데 길을 잘 모르겠어요.Contrast/backgroundLiving nearby contrasts with not knowing the route, while also framing the problem.
예약을 했는데 확인해 주세요.RequestThe reservation is background for the check.

Replacing every -는데 with -지만 can make a request sound as if two facts are being opposed when the first fact actually supplies the reason or setting. 예약을 했지만 확인해 주세요 is possible in a special contrastive context, but it does not give the same neutral setup.

The second line also contains -인데 after the noun phrase 회의 중. Treat the entire expression as the background for 나중에 전화할게요.

Do not force one hidden ending after -는데…

LinePossible continuationPossible purpose
시간은 있는데…장소가 너무 멀어요.State a reservation
시간은 있는데…몇 시에 만날까요?Invite planning
시간은 있는데…오늘은 쉬고 싶어요.Give a preference
죄송한데…다시 말씀해 주시겠어요?Open a polite request

An unfinished -는데 can invite the listener to infer a request, hesitation or contrast. Do not teach it as a secret code that always means “no.” Ask or wait for the rest when the decision matters.

죄송하지만 also introduces a refusal or request, with explicit contrast built into the connector. 죄송한데 presents the apology as background. Neither phrase guarantees that the following words are polite; the complete request and relationship still matter.

Track a plan through contrast and background

SpeakerKoreanMeaning
A토요일에 전시회 갈래요?Would you like to go to the exhibition on Saturday?
B가고 싶지만 오전에는 일이 있어요.I want to go, but I have work in the morning.
A전시회는 저녁까지 하는데 오후 세 시는 어때요?The exhibition runs until evening, so how about 3 p.m.?
B시간은 괜찮은데 장소가 너무 멀어요.The time is fine, but the place is too far.
A역 근처에도 전시장이 있는데 거기로 갈까요?There is also a gallery near the station; shall we go there?
B네, 가까운 곳이면 갈 수 있어요.Yes, I can go if it is somewhere nearby.

B’s first -지만 makes desire and the morning obligation explicit opponents. A’s -는데 supplies the exhibition hours as background for a new time. Later, 괜찮은데 carries a contrast because the place creates a problem.

The final sentence states the condition that resolves the plan. The connectors help organise the discussion, but the agreed place still needs a separate confirmation.

Choose the relationship before the connector

  1. Complete “The room is small, but quiet” with an explicit contrast.
  2. Complete “It is raining, so do you have an umbrella?” with rain as background.
  3. Form the -는데 family with 좋다, 크다 and 멀다.
  4. Why is 예약을 했는데 확인해 주세요 different from 예약을 했지만 확인해 주세요?
  5. Give two possible continuations for 시간이 있는데… and explain why the fragment is ambiguous.
  6. Change 가다 to the past form before -지만.
  7. In the exhibition dialogue, which clause gives the hours as background for suggesting 3 p.m.?
  8. Write one two-clause sentence in which -는데 expresses contrast rather than a reason.
Check the answers and explanations
  1. 방은 작지만 조용해요. -지만 puts size and quietness in an explicit contrast.
  2. 비가 오는데 우산 있어요? The rain frames the practical question that follows.
  3. 좋은데, 큰데, 먼데. Descriptive verbs take -은데 or -ㄴ데, and final ㄹ drops in 멀다 → 먼데.
  4. The -는데 sentence presents the reservation as background for a request. -지만 foregrounds an opposition, so it needs a context in which that contrast makes sense.
  5. For example, 장소가 너무 멀어요 and 몇 시에 만날까요? The fragment can lead to a reservation or to further planning, so do not decide before hearing more.
  6. 갔지만. The past marker -았/었 appears before -지만.
  7. 전시회는 저녁까지 하는데 is the background. It makes the later time proposal possible.
  8. One answer is 이 근처에 사는데 길을 잘 모르겠어요. Living nearby contrasts with not knowing the route, while the first clause still frames the problem.

Rewrite one English sentence containing “but” twice: first with -지만, then with -는데. Change the surrounding situation until both Korean versions make sense, and explain how the relationship changes.

A small listening check

Pronunciation help: Listen for the problem after the connector

괜찮은데 frames a contrast completed by 너무 멀어요. The alternative says both details are positive and does not match the problem.
