Korean public holiday schedule phrases: holiday, closure and shorter hours
Read Korean public-holiday notices and confirm a branch’s opening, shortened hours, last admission and next business day from the latest source.
Separate the holiday from the business hours
You see 공휴일 on the calendar and wonder whether a museum or shop will open. The holiday name tells you about the date, but it does not tell you every business’s hours. This lesson gives you the words to read a closure notice and ask a clear question about the place you plan to visit.
We will read the business-status words, ask about opening and closing, and separate last admission from the time a building closes. The sample notices are for language practice, rather than a calendar of current holiday hours.
Learn closure and shortened-hours words
| Korean | Working meaning | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| 공휴일 | public holiday | calendar status |
| 휴무 | closed / day off | business status |
| 정상 영업 | normal operation | usual schedule |
| 단축 운영 | shortened operation | reduced hours |
| 대체공휴일 | substitute public holiday | calendar label |
| 운영 재개 | resumption of operation | reopening status |
휴무 means the business is closed or taking a day off in this setting. 정상 영업 means it is operating normally. 단축 운영 means it is operating for shorter hours. These expressions answer different questions from 공휴일, which names a public holiday. Read the date and business-status wording together.
대체공휴일 names a substitute public holiday. 운영 재개 describes restarting operations. If you see 운영 재개 with a date, you have a useful clue about when a closure ends. A calendar label and an opening-hours label may appear on the same notice, so give each its own meaning.
Ask whether a place opens and when it closes
| Pattern or sentence | Natural meaning | Point to notice |
|---|---|---|
| 공휴일에도 문을 열어요? | Are you open on the public holiday? | branch-specific question |
| 몇 시까지 운영해요? | Until what time do you operate? | closing time |
| 마지막 입장은 몇 시예요? | When is last admission? | different from closing |
| 다음 영업일은 언제예요? | When is the next business day? | reopening question |
공휴일에도 문을 열어요? asks whether a place opens on the public holiday. Adding 도 to 공휴일 gives the sense of “on the holiday too.” If you know the date, naming it can make the question easier for staff to answer.
몇 시까지 운영해요? asks how late a place operates. 마지막 입장은 몇 시예요? asks when visitors can last enter. 다음 영업일은 언제예요? asks for the next business day. Choose the question that fills the gap in the notice you are reading.
Confirm one holiday schedule
| Speaker | Korean | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Caller | 월요일이 공휴일인데 정상 영업해요? | Monday is a public holiday; are you operating normally? |
| Staff | 오후에는 단축 운영합니다. | We have shortened hours in the afternoon. |
| Caller | 마지막 입장 시간을 알려 주세요. | Please tell me the last admission time. |
| Staff | 현재 공지를 확인해 드릴게요. | I will check the current notice. |
The caller asks whether Monday follows the normal schedule. The reply says hours are shorter, so the caller asks for last admission. The employee offers to check the notice; no exact admission time has been given yet. A useful follow-up would name the branch and wait for that specific time.
Practise with a fictional date. After asking whether the place opens, repeat the hours you heard: 오후 네 시까지예요? means “Until four in the afternoon?” Repeating a time gives the other person a chance to correct a misunderstanding.
Check the specific date and branch
Imagine a notice that gives closing time as six o’clock and last admission as five. A visitor arriving at half past five may find the building open but be too late to enter. 마지막 입장은 몇 시예요? asks for last admission, while 몇 시까지 운영해요? asks how late the place operates.
A branch name and date make an hours question specific. One notice might concern a single location, while another describes a temporary holiday schedule. For a real visit, use the dated notice for the branch you mean; the language here helps you understand and confirm it.
Correct likely misunderstandings
| Avoid | Use or check | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 공휴일 = every place closed | 해당 지점 확인 | operations vary |
| 폐점 시각 = last admission | 둘을 별도 질문 | times can differ |
| 작년 일정 재사용 | 현재 날짜 공지 확인 | calendars and operations change |
공휴일 does not mean that every shop is closed. Look for 휴무 or an opening-hours statement before deciding. Also keep last admission separate from closing time. A building may remain open for visitors already inside after it stops admitting new ones.
Try it in a familiar situation
A fictional notice says 공휴일 단축 운영: 오전 10시–오후 4시. Explain whether the place is closed all day. Then write a question asking whether the branch opens on Monday, and a separate question asking about last admission.
Read the explanation
단축 운영 indicates reduced hours, so this notice does not describe an all-day closure. 월요일에도 문을 열어요? asks whether the place opens on Monday. 마지막 입장은 몇 시예요? asks for last admission. For an actual visit, include the date and branch so the answer refers to the place you mean.
