Travel Korean · Step 8
Order coffee in Korean: one simple café conversation
Order a hot or iced drink, give the quantity, and understand common questions about taking it away.
Learn the order and the likely reply
Ordering a drink is easier when you prepare for both sides of the counter. Saying a perfect first line will not help much if the next question takes you by surprise. This lesson gives you one adaptable order, a few common replies, and a polite way to ask the staff to slow down.
The example is an ordinary café counter interaction, not a rule for every café in Korea. Menus, sizes, ordering kiosks, and service routines vary. Use the words on the actual menu whenever possible. If there is a long queue, a short clear order is more useful than trying every phrase you have learned.
We will order an iced Americano for takeaway. You can change the drink, temperature, and quantity once you understand the pieces.
Build one useful order
Read the order as three chunks: 아이스 아메리카노 / 한 잔 / 주세요. A temporary reading aid is aiseu amerikano / han jan / juseyo. The slashes are practice pauses, not punctuation you must put into the Korean sentence.
주세요 makes a polite request for something. It is not an independent English “please” that can be moved anywhere in any sentence. Here the requested drink comes before it.
잔 counts cups or glasses. 한 is the shortened form of 하나 before this counter. For two drinks use 두 잔. If you need a reminder, study the two number systems and practise small quantities before building longer orders.
Change only the part you need
| Your choice | Useful Korean | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Iced | 아이스 | Use with a menu drink name, such as 아이스 라테. |
| Hot / warm | 따뜻한 | 따뜻한 아메리카노 한 잔 주세요. |
| One cup | 한 잔 | A small quantity before 주세요. |
| Two cups | 두 잔 | 아이스 아메리카노 두 잔 주세요. |
| Tea | 차 | Name the specific tea on the menu if there are several. |
You may see 라테 or the common menu spelling 라떼. When reading a menu aloud, pointing to the printed choice can help. Size names are especially variable: do not assume every shop uses the same small/medium/large labels.
If you want the smaller listed size, 작은 사이즈로 주세요 means “The small size, please.” If the menu uses named sizes, say that name instead. Avoid adding many unfamiliar modifications to your first practice order. Learn the basic exchange, then add one extra choice at a time.
Recognise the questions that may come next
| Staff may ask | Meaning here | A short possible reply |
|---|---|---|
| 아이스로 드릴까요? | Would you like it iced? | 네, 아이스로 주세요. — Yes, iced, please. |
| 드시고 가세요? | Are you having it here? | 가지고 갈게요. — I’ll take it away. |
| 영수증 드릴까요? | Would you like a receipt? | 네, 주세요. — Yes, please. |
드시고 가세요? is a service question about staying to drink, even though a word-by-word translation may sound unusual in English. If you are staying, 여기서 마실게요 means “I’ll drink it here.” If you are leaving, 가지고 갈게요 gives the opposite information.
You do not need to master every grammar ending in the staff’s sentence before using a short reply. First recognise the decision being requested: temperature, where you will drink, size, or receipt. Staff may phrase the same decision differently, so listen for familiar words and use the menu or gesture when needed.
Practise the whole exchange once
You: 안녕하세요. 아이스 아메리카노 한 잔 주세요.
Hello. One iced Americano, please.
Staff: 드시고 가세요?
Are you having it here?
You: 가지고 갈게요.
I’ll take it away.
Staff: 영수증 드릴까요?
Would you like a receipt?
You: 아니요, 괜찮아요. 감사합니다.
No, that’s okay. Thank you.
This is an original practice dialogue. It leaves out payment details and the price because those differ by store and situation. Do not assume a staff member will repeat this exact script in this exact order.
When you did not catch the question
다시 말해 주세요. — Please say it again.
천천히 말해 주세요. — Please speak slowly.
Say one request calmly, then listen to the key choice. Saying only 네 when you have not understood may confirm a choice you did not mean to make. It is fine to show the menu item or use a translation tool for a specific request; clear communication matters more than completing the whole exchange without help.
If you notice a wrong temperature before the order is prepared, politely repeat the intended choice: 아이스로 주세요. Requests are easier to correct early. Keep your voice conversational rather than calling staff from across the room when you are already at the counter.
Take both roles
- Order two iced Americanos.
- You are taking your drink away. Reply to 드시고 가세요?
- Ask the staff to say the question again.
- In the model, does 아니요, 괜찮아요 accept or decline the receipt?
Check the answers and explanations
- 아이스 아메리카노 두 잔 주세요. 두 is used before 잔.
- 가지고 갈게요. You are saying you will take it away.
- 다시 말해 주세요. The action 말해 주세요 asks the person to say it.
- It declines the receipt in this context: “No, that’s okay.” The situation supplies what is being declined.
Repeat the role-play with one hot drink and with two iced drinks. Your success check is practical: can you communicate the item, quantity, and whether you are staying? Continue with travel Korean for your first day.
A small listening check
Pronunciation help: Hear the ending in 갈게요
갈게요 is commonly pronounced [갈께요], with a tense consonant sound, but is spelled 갈게요. Learn this useful reply as a whole phrase before trying to generalise the sound rule.
Listen and choose
Play the sound, then select the Korean you heard. The answer buttons unlock after playback. This is one short practice item, not a pronunciation assessment.
Listen before choosing.
