Common Korean Signs: Read Entrances, Exits and Shop Notices
Finish a beginner Hangul reading sequence with common Korean signs for entrances, exits, business status, restrictions, reservations and information.
Read the sign before translating a full sentence
A short Korean sign is often easier to read than a full sentence. At a doorway, 입구 tells you where to enter; 출구 points to the exit. Once you recognize a few of these words, you can use what you have learned about syllable blocks in a place that feels familiar: a shop, station, or public building.
We will begin with the words on a doorway, move to shop-status notices, and use a short question when a sign leaves something unclear. You can read the Korean first and use the English to check your understanding. The examples describe a fictional shop; actual hours belong to the notice at the place you visit.
Learn high-frequency words by function
| Korean | Working meaning | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| 입구 | entrance | movement sign |
| 출구 | exit | movement sign |
| 영업 중 | open / operating | business status |
| 준비 중 | preparing / not ready yet | temporary status |
| 휴무 | closed / day off | schedule status |
| 안내 | information / guidance | help sign |
Read 입구 and 출구 side by side. The second block is the same, so the first block helps you tell them apart. Then compare 출구 with 출입 금지. The longer expression restricts entry; it does not point you toward an exit. Reading the whole sign matters more than spotting one familiar syllable.
영업 중 says a business is operating, while 준비 중 says it is getting ready. 휴무 describes being closed or taking a day off. 안내 points to information or guidance. Try reading each word as syllable blocks before looking at its meaning; the more often you recognize it, the less you need the English cue.
Turn each sign into a safe action
| Pattern or sentence | Natural meaning | Point to notice |
|---|---|---|
| 화장실은 어디예요? | Where is the restroom? | location question |
| 지금 영업 중이에요? | Are you open now? | status question |
| 출입 금지 구역이에요? | Is this a restricted area? | scope confirmation |
| 예약이 필요해요? | Is a reservation required? | condition question |
화장실은 어디예요? asks where the restroom is. 지금 영업 중이에요? asks whether a business is open now. Both are complete questions you can use after reading a label or a shop notice. The -예요 and -이에요 endings make these everyday questions polite.
출입 금지 and 출구 share a syllable, but the longer sign restricts entry while the shorter word labels an exit. An arrow next to 출구 helps you find the route; it does not change the meaning of a nearby restriction.
Navigate a building with several signs
| Speaker | Korean | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Visitor | 이쪽이 입구예요? | Is this the entrance? |
| Staff | 아니요. 입구는 오른쪽에 있어요. | No. The entrance is on the right. |
| Visitor | 준비 중이면 몇 시에 열어요? | If you are preparing, what time do you open? |
| Staff | 현재 안내문을 확인해 주세요. | Please check the current notice. |
The visitor first asks whether this is the entrance, and the employee points to the right. The visitor then asks when the shop opens. The last answer refers to a posted notice, so the dialogue has not supplied an opening time. That is the detail you still need to read or ask about.
For a smaller speaking task, use 이쪽이 입구예요? while indicating a doorway. If the reply says 오른쪽, look to the right. You are connecting a readable word with a short exchange, rather than trying to translate every notice at once.
Check scope, time and exceptions
Suppose you reach a shop and see 준비 중 on the door. You know the shop is not ready to welcome customers yet, but the sign alone does not tell you when it will open. 몇 시에 열어요? asks “What time do you open?” That is a useful next sentence after recognizing the sign.
A sign may apply to one door, floor, or day. Look for the arrow or date attached to it. For instance, 금연 names a smoking restriction, and 매진 tells you tickets or stock are sold out. Neither word tells you the building itself is closed. Reading the nearby wording helps you avoid combining unrelated messages.
Correct likely misunderstandings
| Avoid | Use or check | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 영업 중 = forever open | 현재 날짜·시간 확인 | status can change |
| 출구와 입구 혼동 | 첫 음절과 화살표 확인 | movement direction matters |
| 출입 금지 무시 | 범위와 담당자 확인 | safety notice must be followed |
If you mix up 입구 and 출구, compare their first blocks again and follow the relevant arrow. If you read 영업 중, use the posted hours to understand the schedule instead of assuming the place stays open indefinitely. These are small reading checks that give each word a practical meaning.
Try it in a familiar situation
Cover the English meanings and read 입구, 출구, 휴무, 영업 중, 준비 중 and 금연. Which two describe a doorway? Which tells you smoking is prohibited? Now imagine a shop with 휴무 on its door. Explain why it would be premature to assume that it is closed permanently.
Read the explanation
입구 is the entrance and 출구 is the exit. 금연 means no smoking. 휴무 refers to being closed or taking a day off in this context; you need the accompanying schedule to know when business resumes. The reading task is to recognize the word, then use nearby dates and arrows to understand where it applies.
