Korean currency and cash vs card: payment phrases, receipts and change
Read won amounts, ask whether you can pay by card or cash, request a receipt, and check the difference between the price, money handed over and change.
Finish a payment without losing track of the amount
The cashier names a price, you hand over a banknote, and then you hear another amount. Which number is the price, and which is your change? At a checkout, understanding those roles matters just as much as recognising the numbers themselves.
This beginner guide to Korean currency and cash vs card focuses on the language of a payment: checking the amount, choosing a method, asking for a receipt and confirming change. For choosing products and quantities, use the shopping lesson. Here, we slow down the final exchange and work through it with invented prices.
The Korea Tourism Organization describes the won as Korea’s monetary unit and notes that cards are widely accepted, while advising visitors to check availability before a purchase. That is a useful reason to ask a short question instead of assuming every card works at every checkout. See the official currency guide for travel information.
Separate the method, the record and the money returned
| Korean | Meaning here | When you need it |
|---|---|---|
| 현금 | Cash | The notes or coins you use to pay. |
| 카드 | Card | The payment card you want to use. |
| 영수증 | Receipt | The record you ask for after the transaction. |
| 거스름돈 | Change | The money returned when you hand over more than the price. |
| 금액 | Amount of money | The figure you want someone to confirm. |
거스름돈 does not mean any coins you happen to have. In this lesson it is the difference returned after a cash payment. It can include notes as well as coins. 영수증 is the receipt, not the change itself.
Try a three-word rehearsal before learning full sentences. Say 현금 while choosing the payment method, 영수증 while pointing to the transaction record, and 거스름돈 while calculating what should come back. Giving each word a different job makes it easier to follow the cashier’s reply.
Read won amounts with the Sino-Korean numbers
| Written amount | Read it as | Build the amount |
|---|---|---|
| ₩1,000 | 천 원 | One thousand won. |
| ₩5,000 | 오천 원 | Five thousand won. |
| ₩10,000 | 만 원 | One unit of ten thousand won. |
| ₩50,000 | 오만 원 | Five units of ten thousand won. |
| ₩7,500 | 칠천오백 원 | Seven thousand plus five hundred won. |
| ₩12,000 | 만 이천 원 | Ten thousand plus two thousand won. |
The first four rows also match the four banknote denominations shown in the official currency guide. The last two rows are practice amounts. The comma separates digits visually; it is not an extra word you say aloud.
Use 천, 백 and 만 with the Sino-Korean system. Do not build a price by attaching native counting forms such as 일곱 to 천. For 7,500 won, the useful chunk is 칠천오백 원. If the two number systems still feel mixed together, review when to use each Korean number system.
When you hear 칠천오백 원이에요., the amount is 7,500 won. 원 ends in a consonant, so the model sentence uses 이에요. You can confirm the amount by repeating 칠천오백 원이요? with a questioning tone. Point to the displayed amount too if you need a visual check.
Ask about the method before announcing your choice
| Your purpose | Korean | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Check whether a card can be used | 카드로 결제할 수 있어요? | Can I pay by card? |
| Check whether cash can be used | 현금으로 결제할 수 있어요? | Can I pay in cash? |
| Choose card payment | 카드로 할게요. | I will pay by card. |
| Choose cash payment | 현금으로 할게요. | I will pay in cash. |
In these expressions, 카드로 and 현금으로 identify the payment method. 카드 ends in a vowel and takes 로; 현금 ends in ㅁ and takes 으로. Learn the two complete chunks together with 할게요.
The question and the choice do different things. 카드로 결제할 수 있어요? checks whether card payment is possible. 카드로 할게요 announces the method you intend to use. If staff have just said that only cash is available, repeating the card announcement does not answer their message.
A cashier may say 현금만 돼요. — “Cash only.” The particle 만 limits the options. Another possible reply is 카드도 돼요. — “Cards are accepted too.” Here 도 adds an option. Listen for that small difference before reaching for your wallet.
Keep three amounts in three separate places
| Speaker | Korean | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Cashier | 칠천오백 원이에요. | It is 7,500 won. |
| Customer | 현금으로 할게요. | I will pay in cash. |
| Cashier | 만 원 받았습니다. | I have received 10,000 won. |
| Cashier | 거스름돈 이천오백 원입니다. | Your change is 2,500 won. |
| Customer | 영수증도 주세요. | Please give me the receipt too. |
The cashier’s second amount is an acknowledgement of what the customer handed over. 받았습니다 means “received.” It does not change the purchase price from 7,500 to 10,000 won. The third amount is labelled 거스름돈, so it describes money coming back.
Run the calculation before playing the conversation. Then listen without looking at the English column and put each amount in the correct place: price, cash handed over, change. This checks comprehension as well as arithmetic.
For another round, use a price of 12,000 won and hand over 20,000 won. Your change should be 8,000 won: 팔천 원. Change the numbers in the roles above while keeping their jobs the same.
Ask for a receipt and answer the offer
| Situation | Korean | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| You request a receipt | 영수증 주세요. | A receipt, please. |
| The cashier offers one | 영수증 필요하세요? | Do you need a receipt? |
| You want it | 네, 주세요. | Yes, please. |
| You do not need it | 아니요, 괜찮아요. | No, that is okay. |
Choose the reply that matches your intention. 네, 주세요 accepts the offer; 아니요, 괜찮아요 declines it. A friendly nod without catching the question can leave you agreeing to something you did not mean, so practise the question and answer as a pair.
영수증도 주세요 contains 도, “too.” It fits after you have received or requested another item, such as your change. The shorter 영수증 주세요 works when you simply want the receipt. Neither expression asks for a discount.
Describe the problem you can see
| What you need | Korean | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Check the displayed total | 금액을 다시 확인해 주세요. | Please check the amount again. |
| Check the change | 거스름돈을 다시 확인해 주세요. | Please check the change again. |
| Ask about using another card | 다른 카드로 해도 돼요? | May I use another card? |
Keep the request specific. If your concern is the change, name 거스름돈. If it is the total on the display, name 금액. You can point to the receipt or the notes in your hand while asking.
카드가 안 돼요. means that the card is not working in the current exchange. It does not, by itself, explain whether the problem is the card, the reader or another part of the payment process. Ask what to do next and follow the cashier’s confirmed instructions.
To practise, have a partner change one detail: the amount, the accepted method, or whether a receipt is offered. Answer the new situation instead of reciting the full conversation unchanged. Three accurate lines are more useful at a checkout than a longer script you cannot adapt.
Check the money and the message
- What does 거스름돈 refer to in a cash payment? Is it always coins?
- Read ₩7,500 in Korean.
- How does 카드로 결제할 수 있어요? differ from 카드로 할게요?
- Staff say 현금만 돼요. Which payment option is available in that reply?
- The price is ₩7,500 and the cashier says 만 원 받았습니다. Has the price changed to ₩10,000?
- For that payment, how much change should come back? Give the amount in Korean.
- Answer 영수증 필요하세요? if you want the receipt.
- The price is ₩12,000 and you hand over ₩20,000. Calculate the change and ask the cashier to check it.
Check the answers and explanations
- The money returned after subtracting the price from the cash handed over. It can be notes, coins or both.
- 칠천오백 원. Use the Sino-Korean numbers with 천 and 백.
- The first asks whether card payment is possible. The second announces your choice to pay by card.
- Cash only. 만 limits the statement; it does not add card payment as another option.
- No. 받았습니다 acknowledges receiving ₩10,000 from the customer. The stated price remains ₩7,500.
- ₩2,500: 이천오백 원. Subtract 7,500 from 10,000.
- 네, 주세요. This accepts the receipt offer.
- ₩8,000: 팔천 원. Ask 거스름돈을 다시 확인해 주세요. The request identifies the change you want checked.
A small listening check
