Order food in a Korean restaurant: from finding a table to paying

Practise a small restaurant conversation, choose the right quantity words, and understand useful replies about ordering and payment.

Learn the next line, not just the first request

You have found something you want to eat. The harder part may be answering the next question: How many people? Which dish? How many portions? This beginner lesson follows a simple restaurant visit from the door to the counter, using polite Korean you can adapt.

You do not need to understand every word on a menu before ordering. Start with one dish name, one quantity, and a request. Then learn two ways to ask for clarification. The questions you hear will depend on the restaurant. Some take orders at the table; others use a kiosk, a table tablet, or counter service.

If you are still learning to read, work slowly with the consonant and vowel guides alongside this lesson. For drink sizes and takeaway replies, use the separate café conversation.

Tell the staff how many people need a table

Who speaksKoreanMeaning in this situation
Staff몇 분이세요?How many people are in your party?
You두 명이에요.There are two of us.
Staff여기 앉으세요.Please sit here.
You감사합니다.Thank you.

Here 분 respectfully counts the guests. In your own answer, 두 명이에요 is a useful way to count two people, including yourself. One person can answer 한 명이에요. The counting forms are 한 and 두 before 명, rather than 하나 and 둘.

Wait for the seating instruction when staff are arranging tables. If you need to get a staff member’s attention, 저기요. works like “Excuse me.” Use a considerate voice and a pause; learning a polite phrase does not mean you need to repeat it over someone who is already helping another table.

Build a short order from three pieces

비빔밥the dish
하나one order
주세요.please give me
Say the pieces together: 비빔밥 하나 주세요. The dish and quantity can change.

비빔밥 하나 주세요. means “One bibimbap, please.” In a clear ordering context, 하나 can stand for one order of the named dish. For portions, rice bowls, and rolls of gimbap, learn the specific counters in the chart below.

To order two different dishes, try 비빔밥 하나하고 김치찌개 하나 주세요. — “One bibimbap and one kimchi stew, please.” 하고 connects the two items here. Pointing at the relevant menu entries can help confirm what you mean.

If you cannot read the name yet, point clearly and say 이거 하나 주세요. — “One of this, please.” The word 이거 depends on something you can identify together. It will be less useful on a phone call or when the staff member cannot see what you are indicating.

Do not count people, portions and bowls the same way

What you are countingExampleWhat it means
People두 명Two people
Portions per person이 인분Two portions
Bowls of rice밥 한 공기One bowl of rice
Rolls of gimbap김밥 한 줄One roll of gimbap

인분 uses Sino-Korean numbers in these examples: 일 인분, 이 인분, 삼 인분. 명, 공기 and 줄 use the native counting forms here: 한, 두, 세. A menu may write 2인분 with a digit; read that as 이 인분. Review the number-system guide if these two sets are new.

Two diners do not automatically mean two separate dishes. A dish can be shared, and a menu may specify a minimum order or a size. If you see a portion label, check what the listed price covers before ordering. 이거 일 인분이에요? asks “Is this one portion?” while pointing to the item you mean.

When a staff member repeats your order, listen again for both the dish and number. If something is wrong, point to the correct item and repeat your short order. Clear repetition is more useful than adding several unfamiliar grammar patterns under pressure.

Ask for what you need, and recognise the reply

Your request or questionEnglish meaningOne reply you may hear
메뉴판 좀 주세요.Could I have a menu, please?잠시만요. — One moment, please.
물 좀 주세요.Some water, please.물은 셀프예요. — Water is self-service.
많이 매워요?Is it very spicy?조금 매워요. — It is a little spicy.
양파는 빼 주세요.Please leave out the onion.어려워요. — That is difficult / we cannot easily do that.

좀 can soften a request. In 메뉴판 좀 주세요, it does not mean you want a “small amount of menu.” Learn the full request and its purpose rather than assigning one English word to every Korean word.

A preference request is not a promise that the kitchen can change the dish. A sauce or filling may already be prepared. Ask first and listen for the answer. The spice question is about someone’s description of the dish; 조금 매워요 does not tell you exactly how spicy it will feel to you.

If the reply is too fast, use 천천히 말씀해 주세요. — “Please speak slowly.” Or try 다시 말씀해 주세요. — “Please say that again.” These are useful recovery phrases even when you know only a few food words.

Finish the visit with a simple payment exchange

When you are ready to pay, 계산할게요. means “I’ll pay now.” If you are unsure where to go, ask 어디에서 계산해요? — “Where do I pay?” Follow that restaurant’s arrangement rather than assuming the bill always comes to the table.

카드로 결제할 수 있어요? asks “Can I pay by card?” It is a question about what is possible there; it does not assume every card or payment method will work. For a receipt, 영수증 주세요. means “A receipt, please.”

At the end, 잘 먹었습니다. is a conventional appreciative phrase after a meal, roughly “Thank you for the meal.” You are expressing appreciation, not giving a literal review of how efficiently you ate. You can also simply say 감사합니다.

Rehearse a visit with one change each time

  1. The staff ask 몇 분이세요? Answer for two people.
  2. Order one bibimbap using the short ordering pattern.
  3. How do you read 2인분: 두 인분 or 이 인분?
  4. You hear 물은 셀프예요. What should you understand?
  5. Ask the staff to repeat a reply politely.
  6. What changes when you replace 두 명 with 이 인분?
Check the answers and explanations
  1. 두 명이에요. You are counting the people in your group.
  2. 비빔밥 하나 주세요. The dish name comes before the quantity and request.
  3. 이 인분. The example uses Sino-Korean 이 with 인분.
  4. Water is self-service. Look for the water station or ask where it is.
  5. 다시 말씀해 주세요. It asks the other person to say it again.
  6. 두 명 counts two people; 이 인분 counts two portions measured per person. They are related ideas, not interchangeable expressions.

For a second round, choose a different dish from a menu you can read. Keep the rest of the sentence stable. Then let a partner ask one follow-up question about quantity. The goal is to complete a small exchange, not recite a long list of restaurant phrases without understanding the reply.

A small listening check

Pronunciation help: Keep a request together

Listen to 비빔밥 하나 주세요 as one request. You can make a small pause after the dish or quantity, but avoid putting a long break between every written syllable. Return to normal speed after trying the slower clip.

Listen and choose

Play the sound, then select the Korean you heard. The answer buttons unlock after playback. This is one short practice item, not a pronunciation assessment.

Listen before choosing.
