Korean nominalization: compare -기 and -(으)ㅁ in activities and formal records
Turn clauses into noun-like units with -기 and -(으)ㅁ while distinguishing everyday evaluation, labels and formal acknowledgment.
Ask what job the nominalized clause performs
한국어 배우기가 재미있어요 means ‘Learning Korean is fun.’ The part 배우기 names the activity, so the rest of the sentence can say something about it. This is the everyday usefulness of a nominalizing ending: it lets an action or a statement take a noun-like role in a larger sentence.
You will also see -(으)ㅁ, especially in notices and compact records. 일정이 변경되었음을 알려드립니다 announces that the schedule has changed. Both endings can turn a clause into something noun-like, but choosing between them depends on the expression and the setting. Comparing an activity, a button label, and a formal announcement makes that difference easier to see.
Compare activity packaging and formal acknowledgment
| Korean | Working meaning | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| 한국어 배우기 | learning Korean | activity packaged as a noun |
| 신청하기 | Apply / applying | interface or task label |
| 변경되었음 | the fact that it changed | formal acknowledgment |
| 확인함 | confirmed / fact of confirming | concise record style |
| 도착했음을 알리다 | notify that someone arrived | formal object clause |
| 읽기가 어렵다 | reading is difficult | activity evaluated |
In 한국어 배우기가 재미있어요, 배우기 is followed by 가 and becomes the activity being described as fun. 신청하기 can stand on a website button as ‘Apply,’ naming the action that clicking it starts. A similar form might appear in a task list: 신청서 확인하기, ‘check the application.’
변경되었음을 알려드립니다 has a different shape. 변경되었음 contains the past form 변경되었-, and 을 marks it as the information being announced. A short record may simply end with 확인함, meaning that something was checked. The ending is useful in concise written notes, although the surrounding record still needs to show what was checked and by whom.
Build the endings accurately
| Pattern or sentence | Natural meaning | Point to notice |
|---|---|---|
| 동사 어간 + -기 | activity or proposition noun | 먹기, 쓰기, 확인하기 |
| 받침 있는 어간 + -음 | formal nominalization | 먹음, 있음 |
| 모음 또는 ㄹ 어간 + -ㅁ | formal nominalization | 감, 만듦 |
| 절 + 을/를 알리다 | announce the nominalized fact | 변경되었음을 알립니다 |
-기 joins directly to the stem: 배우다 becomes 배우기, 먹다 becomes 먹기, and 확인하다 becomes 확인하기. You can then add a particle, as in 읽기가 어렵다, ‘reading is difficult.’ The choice of the following expression matters; an English word ending in -ing does not automatically require -기 in Korean.
For -(으)ㅁ, most consonant-final stems take 음, as in 먹음 and 있음. Vowel-final stems take ㅁ, as in 가다 → 감 and 확인하다 → 확인함. A ㄹ-final stem also takes ㅁ: 만들다 → 만듦. The ㄹ and ㅁ share the final position in 듦, which is why 만들음 is not the spelling used here. Irregular stems need their own check rather than a mechanical substitution.
Move from a personal task to a formal notice
| Speaker | Korean | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| A | 오늘 할 일은 신청서 확인하기예요. | Today’s task is checking the application. |
| B | 변경된 내용도 확인했어요? | Did you check the changed details too? |
| A | 네. 일정이 변경되었음을 신청자에게 알렸어요. | Yes. I notified applicants that the schedule had changed. |
| B | 기록에 알림 완료라고 남겨 주세요. | Please record that the notice was completed. |
The first speaker names a task: 오늘 할 일은 신청서 확인하기예요. 확인하기 acts like a task label inside the sentence. When the speaker reports notifying applicants, 일정이 변경되었음을 신청자에게 알렸어요 treats the changed schedule as the information communicated.
That formal wording is possible in conversation about paperwork, but it can sound more written than a casual report. 일정이 바뀌었다고 알려 줬어요 is a more conversational way to say ‘I told them the schedule changed.’ Comparing the two helps you see that the lesson is about how information is packaged, rather than finding one form that suits every conversation.
Distinguish lexical nouns from productive forms
Some words that end in 음 or ㅁ are established nouns. 도움 means help, and 걸음 means a step. They are worth learning as words in their own right, rather than assuming each one is a freshly built formal clause. The sentence and the dictionary meaning help distinguish a familiar noun from a grammatical ending.
The reading passage shows -기 in interface labels such as 위치 확인하기 and 답장하기. It uses -음을 when recording or announcing completed events. Notice the distinction between reading a message and confirming attendance: 메시지를 읽었음 does not, by itself, show that someone has agreed to attend. The rest of the sentence supplies that contrast.
Correct likely misunderstandings
| Avoid | Use or check | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 배움이 재미있어요를 모든 상황의 배우기로 교체 | 한국어 배우기가 재미있어요 | choose a productive clause that fits the predicate |
| 만들음 | 만듦 | ㄹ-final stem takes -ㅁ in this form |
| 확인함 = who confirmed is known | 문서에서 주체 확인 | concise nominalization can omit the agent |
It is tempting to swap 배우기 and 배움 wherever English says ‘learning.’ That loses the difference between naming an activity in a particular grammatical construction and using an established noun. 한국어 배우기가 재미있어요 is a useful model for the activity-plus-evaluation pattern; it does not make every sentence with 배움 wrong.
The endings do not identify the person responsible for an action. A record saying 확인함 needs context to tell you who checked what. They also do not automatically make an event completed: 변경되었음 includes a past marker, while 확인하기 on a task list names something to do. Look at the stem, surrounding words, and document heading together.
Read a fictional notice and task record

The notice informed participants that the training location had changed.
Two items, “Check location” and “Find transportation,” were added to the website.
The coordinator recorded that an email had been sent to every participant.
However, the fact that a message had been read did not mean attendance had been confirmed.
A participant pressed the Reply button to report attendance status again.
The final list was made after confirming that the replies had been completed.

Try it in a familiar situation
A website button says 신청하기, and a notice says 장소가 변경되었음을 알려드립니다. What is each expression doing? How would you write the -(으)ㅁ form of 만들다?
Read the explanation
신청하기 names the action offered by the button: applying. 장소가 변경되었음을 is the information announced by the notice—that the location has changed. 만들다 becomes 만듦, with ㄹ and ㅁ together in the final position. These examples do not mean that -기 and -(으)ㅁ can always replace one another.
