Separate airline rules from Korean vocabulary

Airport conversations are easier to follow when you know which part of the journey you are dealing with. At check-in, you may be asked about a booking, a passport, or a bag. At the gate, the questions are usually about where to wait and when boarding begins. Learning the words in those small groups gives you something to recognize even when the announcement feels fast.

Three particularly useful words are 수하물, 탑승권, and 탑승구: baggage, boarding pass, and boarding gate. This guide brings them into short questions you can use with airport staff. The examples help you ask about your own flight; the actual baggage rules and deadlines still come from your airline and the airport information for that journey.

Follow the sequence from check-in to boarding

위탁 수하물checked baggagebag handed to airline
기내 수하물carry-on baggagebag kept in cabin if allowed
탑승 시간boarding timetime to be at the gate

위탁 수하물 is checked baggage—the bag you hand over to the airline. 기내 수하물 is cabin or carry-on baggage. The distinction describes where the bag travels, rather than how much you are allowed to bring. When you are unsure about a particular bag, 이 가방을 위탁할 수 있어요? asks whether you can check this bag.

탑승 수속 refers to the check-in process, 탑승권 is the boarding pass, and 탑승구 is the gate. Keeping 권 and 구 separate is especially helpful: staff may ask to see your 탑승권 while directing you to a 탑승구. 탑승 시간 concerns boarding, so it is worth checking alongside the departure time instead of treating the two as interchangeable.

Ask precise operational questions

Pattern or sentenceNatural meaningPoint to notice
이 가방을 위탁할 수 있어요?Can I check this bag?ask about this specific bag
기내 수하물 규정을 어디에서 확인해요?Where can I check the carry-on rules?directs you to current rules
탑승구가 변경됐나요?Has the gate changed?verify live status
몇 시까지 탑승구에 가야 해요?By what time must I get to the gate?asks a deadline

몇 시까지 탑승구에 가야 해요? asks by what time you need to reach the gate. The ending -까지 gives a deadline. Compare it with 탑승은 몇 시에 시작해요?, which asks when boarding starts. Both questions concern time, but they ask for different information.

탑승구가 변경됐나요? is useful when the gate on a display differs from the one printed earlier. 변경됐나요 asks whether a change has happened. If your question is simply where the gate is, 탑승구가 어디예요? is enough. For baggage details, 기내 수하물 규정을 어디에서 확인해요? asks where you can check the carry-on rules, rather than expecting the staff member to infer which rule you mean.

Resolve a baggage question before leaving the counter

SpeakerKoreanMeaning
Traveler이 가방을 위탁할 수 있어요?Can I check this bag?
Staff무게와 내용물을 확인해야 합니다.We need to check the weight and contents.
Traveler이 가방은 기내에 가져갈 수 있나요?Can I bring this bag into the cabin?
Staff네, 항공사 규정을 확인해 드릴게요.Yes, I will check the airline rules.

The traveler starts with one concrete bag: 이 가방을 위탁할 수 있어요? The reply 무게와 내용물을 확인해야 합니다 explains that the weight and contents need checking first. It is a step toward an answer, rather than confirmation that the bag has already been accepted.

For a cabin-baggage question, 이 가방은 기내에 가져갈 수 있나요? is more direct: ‘Can I bring this bag into the cabin?’ 항공사 규정을 확인해 드릴게요 then means the staff member will check the airline rules for you. The -해 드릴게요 ending makes the offer polite and describes what the staff member is about to do.

Read the boarding pass with the live display

A boarding pass helps you find your flight and the information issued at check-in. Before following a gate change on a screen, match the flight number and destination with your own journey. If the gate is different, 탑승구가 변경됐나요? gives you a short way to confirm the change with staff.

When an instruction is hard to catch, 다시 말씀해 주세요 means ‘Please say that again,’ and 조금 천천히 말씀해 주세요 asks the speaker to slow down. These are useful at a counter as well as at the gate. A short clarification is often more practical than trying to explain a long misunderstanding in Korean.

출발 시간만 보기탑승 시간과 탑승구도 확인boarding has a separate deadline and place

The most easily confused pair here is 탑승권 and 탑승구. 권 points to the pass you show; 구 points to the place you go. You can remember the difference through two questions: 탑승권을 보여 드릴까요? asks whether you should show your boarding pass, while 탑승구가 어디예요? asks where the gate is.

A departure time is not a safe substitute for a boarding deadline. The useful Korean distinction is between 몇 시에 출발해요? (‘What time does it depart?’) and 몇 시까지 가야 해요? (‘By what time do I need to get there?’). The language lets you ask clearly without supplying an assumed deadline or baggage allowance.

Try it in a familiar situation

Your boarding pass and the airport screen show different gates. Which question checks whether the gate changed? Then ask by what time you need to be at the gate.

Read the explanation

탑승구가 변경됐나요? checks whether the gate changed. 몇 시까지 탑승구에 가야 해요? asks for the deadline. 탑승구 is the gate; 탑승권 is your boarding pass. Compare your flight number and destination before treating a screen entry as information about your flight.
