Korean bus phrases: confirm the route, stop and card response
Ask whether a bus serves your destination, count stops, understand a transfer reply and solve a basic card problem.
A route number alone does not confirm your direction
You find the correct bus number, but buses with similar numbers pass on opposite sides of the road. The display changes, the driver gives a short reply, and you are not sure whether to board. One destination question can prevent a long detour.
This beginner public-transportation lesson focuses on Korean bus phrases: destination, direction, number of stops, transfer, stop request and payment-card clarification. It does not replace a live route planner or the operator’s instructions.
Routes, fares, payment methods, transfer rules, stop names and service hours vary by city and operator and can change. Check the current official map or app, then use the Korean below to confirm what you see.
Ask about the destination before boarding
이 버스가 marks “this bus” as the subject, and 서울역에 marks the destination. A bare 가요? is too dependent on pointing when several buses are present.
몇 번 asks for a route number in this context. 어느 방향 asks which direction. Repeat the destination in your confirmation: 서울역 방향이 맞아요? — “Is the Seoul Station direction correct?”
Listen for direct, transfer or opposite-direction replies
| Reply | Meaning | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| 네, 서울역에 가요. | Yes, it goes to Seoul Station. | Confirm the stop if needed. |
| 반대편에서 타세요. | Board on the opposite side. | Do not board this one. |
| 이 버스는 안 가요. | This bus does not go there. | Ask which number to take. |
| 두 정거장 후에 갈아타세요. | Transfer after two stops. | Ask where and to which route. |
| 종점까지 가세요. | Go to the final stop. | Confirm the final-stop name. |
A reply can contain a negation followed by an alternative. Keep listening after 안 가요. The next words may supply 반대편, a different route number or a transfer point.
갈아타세요 tells you to transfer. Ask 어디에서 갈아타요? and 몇 번으로 갈아타요? when either the place or next route is missing.
Separate the next stop from the number of stops remaining
| Korean | Meaning | Information type |
|---|---|---|
| 다음 정류장이 서울역이에요? | Is the next stop Seoul Station? | Immediate next stop |
| 서울역까지 몇 정거장이에요? | How many stops is it to Seoul Station? | Number remaining |
| 세 정거장 후에 내리세요. | Get off after three stops. | Instruction |
| 이번 정류장에서 내려요. | Get off at this stop. | Current stop |
| 종점에서 내리세요. | Get off at the final stop. | Route endpoint |
정류장 is a bus stop. In 세 정거장 후, 정거장 counts stops in ordinary conversation. 다음 means next; 이번 means this current one in the sequence.
Do not choose after hearing only the destination name. The words before or after it tell you whether it is next, three stops away or a transfer point.
Confirm when and how to request the stop
| Question or sign | Meaning | Why use it |
|---|---|---|
| 여기에서 내리면 돼요? | Should I get off here? | Confirm the stop. |
| 하차벨을 눌러야 해요? | Do I need to press the stop bell? | Confirm the request method. |
| 이번 정류장에 내려 주세요. | Please let me off at this stop. | A spoken request when appropriate. |
| 문이 어느 쪽에서 열려요? | Which side does the door open on? | Prepare without blocking others. |
내리다 means to get off. -면 돼요? asks whether an action is the right or sufficient next step. 눌러야 해요? asks whether pressing is required.
Follow the vehicle’s signs and the driver’s instructions. Door use, stop-request equipment and boarding procedures can differ. Move only when it is safe and use handrails where provided.
Describe the payment problem instead of repeating “card”
| Korean | Meaning | Possible reply |
|---|---|---|
| 카드가 안 찍혀요. | The card is not registering. | Try again or follow staff instructions. |
| 다시 찍어야 해요? | Do I need to tap it again? | Yes, no or use another method. |
| 이 카드로 탈 수 있어요? | Can I ride using this card? | Eligibility depends on the system. |
| 현금으로 낼 수 있어요? | Can I pay in cash? | The current operator supplies the answer. |
| 어디에 찍어요? | Where do I tap it? | The reader location. |
찍다 has many meanings. In this transport context, 카드를 찍다 means to tap or present a card to the reader. 안 찍혀요 reports that the system is not registering it.
Do not claim that every bus accepts the same card, cash or mobile payment. Show the card only as needed, ask the driver or staff, and follow the posted payment instruction.
Confirm the route, count and stop
| Speaker | Korean | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Traveler | 이 버스가 서울역에 가요? | Does this bus go to Seoul Station? |
| Driver | 네, 가요. 세 정거장 후에 내리세요. | Yes. Get off after three stops. |
| Traveler | 다음 정류장은 아니죠? | It is not the next stop, right? |
| Driver | 네. 세 번째 정류장이에요. | Right. It is the third stop. |
| Traveler | 하차벨은 언제 눌러요? | When do I press the stop bell? |
| Driver | 두 번째 정류장을 지나서 누르세요. | Press it after passing the second stop. |
| Traveler | 서울역은 세 정거장 후에 있고, 두 번째 정류장을 지난 뒤에 벨을 누르면 되죠? | Seoul Station is three stops away, and I should press the bell after passing the second stop, right? |
| Driver | 네, 맞아요. | Yes, that is correct. |
The traveler separates “next stop” from “third stop” and restates the timing of the bell. The route and procedure are fictional practice details.
On a real trip, compare the spoken reply with the stop display or current route information. If they conflict, ask again before the bus moves too far.
Do not let one number answer two different questions
- Ask whether this bus goes to Seoul Station.
- The reply is 반대편에서 타세요. What should you do?
- Ask how many stops remain to Seoul Station.
- Distinguish 다음 정류장 from 이번 정류장.
- Ask whether you need to press the stop bell.
- Report that the payment card is not registering.
- A reply says 두 정거장 후에 갈아타세요. What two details may still be missing?
- In the dialogue, when should the traveler press the bell?
Check the answers and explanations
- 이 버스가 서울역에 가요? It names both the vehicle and destination.
- Board on the opposite side rather than this bus. Confirm the destination there.
- 서울역까지 몇 정거장이에요? It asks for a count, not whether the next stop is correct.
- 다음 정류장 is the next stop; 이번 정류장 is the current stop in the sequence.
- 하차벨을 눌러야 해요? It checks the required stop-request action.
- 카드가 안 찍혀요. The transport context gives 찍히다 the card-reader meaning.
- The transfer location and the next route number may be missing. Ask 어디에서 and 몇 번으로.
- After passing the second stop, so the bus can stop at the fictional third stop, Seoul Station.
Draw a four-stop fictional route. Give a partner one destination, one transfer and one card problem. The partner must ask a different question for route number, direction, stop count and payment response.
A small listening check
Pronunciation help: Listen for the stop count
세 정거장 후에 supplies the remaining count. Do not choose after hearing only 서울역 and 내리세요.
Listen and choose
Play the sound, then select the Korean you heard. The answer buttons unlock after playback. This is one short practice item, not a pronunciation assessment.
Listen before choosing.
