Korean dates and days: confirm an appointment time
Read Korean dates, distinguish a calendar date from a weekday, and confirm the day and time of a simple appointment.
Turn a calendar entry into a confirmed plan
A message says the lesson is on 금요일, Friday. Your calendar shows two Fridays this month. Knowing the weekday is useful, but it is not yet a complete appointment.
This beginner lesson extends the two Korean number systems into dates and times. You will read a year, month and date; distinguish 날짜 from 요일; and confirm when an event begins and ends.
All schedules in this lesson are invented. Use the form to practise Korean, then replace the information with a real appointment you have checked.
Read large calendar units from left to right
| Unit | Korean reading | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Year | 년 — year | 이천이십육년 — 2026 |
| Month | 월 — month | 구월 — September |
| Calendar date | 일 — day | 십팔일 — the 18th |
| Whole date | 이천이십육년 구월 십팔일 | September 18, 2026 |
Calendar years, months and dates use Sino-Korean numbers. Unit nouns are spaced by the general rule, so 이천이십육 년 구 월 십팔 일 is the principled form. Korean orthography also permits the units to be attached in calendar expressions: 이천이십육년 구월 십팔일. This lesson uses that permitted compact style consistently. The written numeral 9월 is read 구월.
English date order varies by country. The Korean sequence shown here is large to small: year, month, day. Do not move the month to the front just because your English calendar does.
The syllable 일 can represent the Sino-Korean number one or the calendar unit “day,” depending on its position. In the compact spelling 십일일, the numeral 십일 means eleven and the final 일 is the day unit: the eleventh day. Written digits, 11일, make that structure easier to see.
Add the weekday without replacing the date
| Korean | English |
|---|---|
| 월요일 | Monday |
| 화요일 | Tuesday |
| 수요일 | Wednesday |
| 목요일 | Thursday |
| 금요일 | Friday |
| 토요일 | Saturday |
| 일요일 | Sunday |
요일 means day of the week. 날짜 asks about the calendar date. Compare 무슨 요일이에요? — “What day of the week is it?” with 날짜가 어떻게 돼요? — “What is the date?”
A reply such as 금요일이에요 answers the weekday question. A reply such as 구월 십팔일이에요 answers the date question. When an appointment matters, combine them: 구월 십팔일 금요일이에요.
Build one complete appointment card
Clock hours use native Korean counting forms: 한 시, 두 시, 세 시. Minutes use Sino-Korean numbers: 십 분, 삼십 분. Therefore 2:30 p.m. is 오후 두 시 삼십 분.
오전 places a time before noon; 오후 places it after noon. If the meeting is at noon or midnight, avoid guessing from an incomplete number. Ask for a precise time or use the exact wording supplied by the organiser.
Write the calendar date with digits if that reduces mistakes, then practise saying it aloud. The skill is to connect the written plan with the spoken confirmation.
Ask for the missing part
| Question | Possible reply | Information |
|---|---|---|
| 날짜가 어떻게 돼요? | 구월 십팔일이에요. | Calendar date |
| 무슨 요일이에요? | 금요일이에요. | Weekday |
| 몇 시에 시작해요? | 오후 두 시에 시작해요. | Starting time |
| 몇 시에 끝나요? | 오후 세 시 반에 끝나요. | Ending time |
어떻게 돼요? in the date question asks what the settled information is. It is not asking for a method. Learn the whole question with the answer it requests.
The particle 에 marks the event time in these replies. 시작해요 and 끝나요 give opposite boundaries. Hearing only 오후 두 시 does not tell you whether that is the start or finish, so keep listening to the predicate.
Confirm a change instead of copying an old time
| Speaker | Korean | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Student | 수업이 구월 십팔일 맞아요? | Is the class on September 18? |
| Teacher | 네, 금요일이에요. | Yes, it is Friday. |
| Student | 오후 두 시에 시작해요? | Does it start at 2 p.m.? |
| Teacher | 아니요, 두 시 반에 시작해요. | No, it starts at 2:30. |
| Student | 금요일 두 시 반 맞죠? | Friday at 2:30, right? |
| Teacher | 네, 맞아요. | Yes, that is right. |
The student first confirms the date, then discovers that the remembered time is wrong. The final line repeats the corrected weekday and time. It does not preserve the rejected two o’clock.
This invented exchange demonstrates a useful habit: repeat the version you will put on your calendar. A bare 네 after several details can leave the scope of confirmation unclear.
Read and confirm the calendar information
- Which number system is the starting choice for calendar months and dates?
- What does 무슨 요일이에요? ask for?
- Read 9월 18일 in Korean.
- Build 2:30 p.m. from 오후, the native hour and Sino-Korean minutes.
- The event is on Friday, but there are several Fridays. What additional information should you confirm?
- In the dialogue, was the corrected starting time two o’clock or two thirty?
- Write a question asking when an event ends.
- Write one confirmation containing September 18, Friday and 2:30 p.m.
Check the answers and explanations
- Sino-Korean numbers. Use them with 년, 월 and 일 for calendar dates.
- It asks for the weekday, such as 금요일. It does not by itself request the numeric calendar date.
- 구월 십팔일. This answer uses the permitted compact spelling; 구 월 십팔 일 is also correct under the general spacing rule.
- 오후 두 시 삼십 분. Hours use the native counting form 두; minutes use Sino-Korean 삼십.
- Confirm the calendar date, and confirm the month and year when the broader context does not make them certain.
- Two thirty. The teacher rejects two o’clock and says 두 시 반에 시작해요.
- 몇 시에 끝나요? It asks for the finishing time rather than the start.
- 구월 십팔일 금요일 오후 두 시 반 맞죠? It repeats the three details to be checked.
For a personal practice card, write a fictional appointment first. Read it aloud, hide it and reconstruct all three details. Then check each unit rather than judging the entire answer as simply right or wrong.
A small listening check
Pronunciation help: Listen through the final time detail
Both choices share the same date and weekday. The small word 반 changes two o’clock to two thirty, so do not decide before the end.
Listen and choose
Play the sound, then select the Korean you heard. The answer buttons unlock after playback. This is one short practice item, not a pronunciation assessment.
Listen before choosing.
