Traditional market Korean: confirm quantity, total and payment
Ask for an item at a Korean market, understand the unit being sold, confirm the total, and respond politely when the price is fixed.
Confirm what one price buys
A sign shows 5,000 won. Is that for one piece, one bag or a measured amount? Repeating the number does not solve the missing unit.
This intermediate traditional-market Korean lesson follows a purchase from pointing to an item through quantity, total and payment. It extends basic shopping Korean and the cash and card lesson with a busier market exchange.
Products, units, displayed prices and payment options differ by stall. Every price and stall in the dialogue is invented. Read the signs in front of you and confirm the actual seller’s answer.
Build the purchase from four separate decisions
In a crowded stall, a short question can work when both people can see the same product. Pointing and saying 이거 뭐예요? asks what the item is. Follow with 한 봉지에 얼마예요? to ask the price per bag.
봉지 counts bags. 개 is a general counter for many individual items. 접시 can count plates, and 병 counts bottles. Use the unit the seller gives instead of assuming every item is sold by piece.
Say the unit and amount together
| Korean | Meaning | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| 한 개 | one item | An individual item |
| 두 봉지 | two bags | A packaged amount |
| 이천 원어치 | 2,000 won worth | An amount defined by price |
| 조금만 | only a little | A vague amount that may need a clearer unit |
원어치 means an amount worth the named sum. 이천 원어치 주세요. asks for 2,000 won worth. It does not say that every seller offers that quantity or that the unit price is negotiable.
조금만 can be useful when the seller is serving a flexible amount, but it leaves “a little” open to interpretation. If accuracy matters, repeat the seller’s unit or point to the displayed package.
Distinguish unit price, total and change
| Question | Meaning | A useful reply |
|---|---|---|
| 한 봉지에 얼마예요? | How much is one bag? | 오천 원이에요. |
| 두 봉지면 얼마예요? | How much would two bags be? | 만 원이에요. |
| 전부 얼마예요? | How much is it altogether? | 만 이천 원이에요. |
| 거스름돈이 얼마예요? | How much is the change? | 삼천 원이에요. |
The first two questions connect a price to a quantity. 전부 asks for the total of the items included in the transaction. 거스름돈 is money returned after payment; it is not another name for the total.
Repeat a number with its job: 두 봉지에 만 원 맞아요? — “Is it 10,000 won for two bags?” That checks more than asking 만 원? with no quantity.
Ask once, then accept a clear fixed-price answer
| Customer | Seller | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 조금 깎아 주실 수 있어요? | 죄송하지만 정찰제예요. | Could you reduce it a little? — Sorry, the prices are fixed. |
| 그럼 한 봉지만 주세요. | 네, 오천 원이에요. | Then please give me just one bag. — Yes, it is 5,000 won. |
깎아 주실 수 있어요? is a polite request about a possible reduction. It is not a right to a discount and does not imply that bargaining is expected at every traditional market or every stall. 정찰제 indicates fixed pricing.
After a clear refusal, the customer changes the quantity rather than repeating the request. The 2026 K-tourism market campaign described by VISITKOREA specifically includes fixed pricing among its service improvements at participating markets. That current example is another reason to check the actual sign and seller instead of applying one bargaining stereotype to all markets.
Track the total through an invented purchase
| Speaker | Korean | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Customer | 이 떡은 한 팩에 얼마예요? | How much is one pack of this rice cake? |
| Seller | 한 팩에 사천 원이에요. | It is 4,000 won per pack. |
| Customer | 두 팩하고 이 음료 하나 주세요. | Please give me two packs and one of this drink. |
| Seller | 전부 만 원이에요. | It is 10,000 won altogether. |
| Customer | 카드로 결제해도 돼요? | May I pay by card? |
| Seller | 네, 카드 돼요. | Yes, card is accepted. |
| Customer | 두 팩하고 음료 하나, 만 원 맞죠? | Two packs and one drink, 10,000 won, right? |
| Seller | 네, 맞아요. | Yes, that is right. |
The rice-cake subtotal is 8,000 won, so the invented total implies that the drink is 2,000 won. The final question checks both the included items and total. It does not ask the learner to believe that these are real market prices.
Some stalls may accept a card and others may not. 카드 돼요? asks the seller in front of you. If the answer is unclear, do not infer acceptance from a neighbouring shop’s sign.
Keep the unit attached to the number
- What missing information should you ask for when a sign shows 5,000 won but no unit?
- How do you ask for 2,000 won worth of an item?
- Distinguish 전부 얼마예요? from 거스름돈이 얼마예요?.
- Write a confirmation for two bags costing 10,000 won.
- The seller says 정찰제예요. What does that mean for your next reply?
- In the fictional dialogue, what items are included in the 10,000-won total?
- Does 카드 돼요? prove that every stall in the market accepts a card?
- Write one order for one bag, then ask the total.
Check the answers and explanations
- Ask what quantity the price covers, for example 한 봉지에 오천 원이에요? The unit makes the number usable.
- 이천 원어치 주세요. It requests an amount defined by that value, subject to what the seller can provide.
- 전부 asks for the purchase total. 거스름돈 asks for the money returned after payment.
- 두 봉지에 만 원 맞아요? It checks the quantity and price together.
- It means the prices are fixed. Accept the answer, choose the item or change your quantity rather than demanding a discount.
- Two packs of rice cake and one drink. The final confirmation repeats all three units.
- No. It asks this seller about this transaction. Payment options can differ by stall.
- 한 봉지 주세요. 전부 얼마예요? The first sentence sets the quantity; the second asks for the total.
Role-play once with a visible list of three invented items. The seller changes either a unit or the payment answer. The customer must repeat the final purchase accurately before paying.
A small listening check
Pronunciation help: Listen for the item count before the total
Both options end with the same total. The quantity word 하나 confirms one drink; 두 개 would change the order.
Listen and choose
Play the sound, then select the Korean you heard. The answer buttons unlock after playback. This is one short practice item, not a pronunciation assessment.
Listen before choosing.
