Korean dining etiquette phrases: ask before sharing, pouring or paying
Use polite Korean to check how a dish is shared, decline alcohol, and agree on payment without turning habits into universal rules.
A polite question is more useful than a list of absolute rules
A large dish arrives in the middle of the table. One person reaches for a serving utensil, another lifts a bottle, and someone else walks toward the register. A rule list cannot tell you what this group or restaurant has agreed to do.
This intermediate guide treats “Korean dining etiquette rules you should know” as a communication lesson. You will ask whether a dish is shared, offer to pour, decline alcohol clearly, request a personal plate and confirm how the group will pay.
Practices vary by household, generation, restaurant, occasion and individual preference. Observe the setting and ask. The dialogues are original study situations, not a rulebook for all Koreans.
Offer before taking over a shared task
| Korean | Meaning | Relationship |
|---|---|---|
| 제가 덜어 드릴까요? | Shall I serve some onto your plate? | An offer toward the other person. |
| 조금만 주세요. | Please give me just a little. | The diner controls quantity. |
| 저는 괜찮아요. | I am okay without it. | A polite refusal in context. |
| 각자 덜어 먹을까요? | Shall we each serve ourselves? | A proposal for the group. |
덜다 means to take or transfer a portion from a larger amount. -아/어 드릴까요? offers an action for another person. The answer can specify quantity instead of giving a bare yes.
A refusal such as 괜찮아요 depends on context. If several offers are happening, say 음식은 괜찮아요 or 조금만 주세요 so the object is clear.
Offer a drink without assuming consent
| Move | Korean | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Offer | 제가 따라 드릴까요? | Shall I pour it for you? |
| Accept | 네, 조금만 부탁드려요. | Yes, just a little, please. |
| Decline alcohol | 저는 술은 안 마셔요. | I do not drink alcohol. |
| Choose another drink | 물로 할게요. | I will have water. |
따르다 means to pour a liquid. In 따라 드릴까요?, the verb changes to 따라 before 드리다. The offer leaves room for the other person to accept, limit the amount or decline.
No learner needs to drink alcohol to be polite. 술은 안 마셔요 gives a direct boundary, and 물로 할게요 supplies an alternative. Health, religion, recovery, age and personal choice do not require an explanation at the table.
Ask whether the group is ready instead of policing age order
| Korean | Meaning | Use |
|---|---|---|
| 이제 먹을까요? | Shall we eat now? | Check that the group is ready. |
| 먼저 드세요. | Please eat first. | Invite another person to begin. |
| 잘 먹겠습니다. | Thank you; I will enjoy the meal. | A conventional pre-meal expression. |
| 천천히 드세요. | Please take your time eating. | A courteous invitation, not a command to hurry. |
Some etiquette guides present one age-based sequence as universal. Real meals include friends, families, clients, children, hosts and informal gatherings. 이제 먹을까요? checks the actual group rather than guessing a hierarchy.
잘 먹겠습니다 literally announces that one will eat well and conventionally expresses appreciation before a meal. Use it when someone has prepared or provided the meal; it does not settle who pays.
Agree on payment before the register becomes confusing
| Korean | Meaning | What remains to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| 제가 낼게요. | I will pay. | Whether the offer covers everyone. |
| 각자 계산할까요? | Shall we each pay our own share? | Whether the store can process it that way. |
| 나눠서 결제할 수 있어요? | Can we split the payment? | The restaurant’s current payment method. |
| 한꺼번에 계산해 주세요. | Please charge it together. | Who will settle with the group afterward. |
계산하다 refers to settling or paying the bill in this restaurant context, while 결제하다 focuses on processing payment. 각자 means each person separately; 한꺼번에 means all at once.
Payment systems and group customs vary. A friend’s 제가 낼게요 is an offer, not evidence that one category of person must always pay. Confirm the group plan and ask the restaurant what can be processed.
Make every shared decision explicit
| Speaker | Korean | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Mina | 이 음식은 다 같이 먹는 거예요? | Do we all share this dish? |
| Joon | 네, 앞접시에 각자 덜어 먹어요. | Yes, each person serves some onto a small plate. |
| Mina | 제가 음료를 따라 드릴까요? | Shall I pour the drinks? |
| Alex | 고마워요. 저는 술은 안 마셔서 물로 할게요. | Thank you. I do not drink alcohol, so I will have water. |
| Joon | 좋아요. 이제 먹을까요? | Great. Shall we eat now? |
| Mina | 네. 계산은 각자 할까요? | Yes. Shall we each pay our share? |
| Alex | 좋아요. 가능한지 직원에게 물어볼게요. | Great. I will ask the staff whether that is possible. |
The group confirms sharing, serving, drink consent, starting and payment. Alex declines alcohol without apology and offers a practical next step for payment.
The dialogue does not label one approach as the only correct etiquette. Its useful habit is explicit, polite coordination.
Replace assumptions with short checks
- Ask whether everyone shares the dish.
- You want only a small serving. How do you answer 제가 덜어 드릴까요??
- Explain what 드릴까요 contributes in 따라 드릴까요?.
- Decline alcohol and choose water without giving a personal reason.
- Ask whether the group should start eating now.
- Distinguish 제가 낼게요 from 각자 계산할까요?.
- Ask restaurant staff whether the payment can be split.
- In the dialogue, what five decisions does the group confirm?
Check the answers and explanations
- 이 음식은 다 같이 먹는 거예요? It checks the serving arrangement directly.
- 네, 조금만 주세요. The answer accepts the offer while limiting the quantity.
- It presents the pouring as an offer performed for the listener, who can accept or decline.
- 저는 술은 안 마셔요. 물로 할게요. The boundary and alternative are both clear.
- 이제 먹을까요? It checks readiness without assuming an age or status sequence.
- 제가 낼게요 is the speaker’s offer to pay. 각자 계산할까요? proposes that each person pay a separate share.
- 나눠서 결제할 수 있어요? The restaurant must supply the current answer.
- They confirm whether the dish is shared, how to serve it, whether to pour alcohol, when to begin and how to pay.
Role-play the same meal twice. In the second round, change one condition: individual portions, no serving utensil, a non-alcoholic choice or a register that cannot split payment. Keep the language flexible enough to solve the new situation.
A small listening check
Pronunciation help: Track two decisions joined by -고
Listen for 다 같이 with 먹고, then 각자 with 계산. Do not choose after the first half.
Listen and choose
Play the sound, then select the Korean you heard. The answer buttons unlock after playback. This is one short practice item, not a pronunciation assessment.
Listen before choosing.
