Korean future tense -(으)ㄹ 거예요: plans, intentions and predictions

Build polite future sentences, choose 을/ㄹ, and separate a plan from a cautious prediction.

Beginner18–22 min · future-sentence practiceExplained in English

One future form can express more than a calendar fact

You learn 갈 거예요 as “will go,” then see it in a personal plan, a weather prediction and a question about someone’s intention. The English word will does not explain every Korean use.

This beginner lesson teaches -(으)ㄹ 거예요 for a planned action, intention or prediction. You will attach the form, add a time phrase and choose a reply that matches certainty.

Future meaning also appears through present forms, schedules and other endings. Treat this as one productive beginner pattern rather than the only Korean future tense.

Attach ㄹ after a vowel and 을 after most consonants

가다 → 갈 거예요will go / plan to go
먹다 → 먹을 거예요will eat / plan to eat
만들다 → 만들 거예요will make / plan to make
Remove 다, then choose ㄹ 거예요 or 을 거예요.

After a vowel, add ㄹ 거예요: 가다 → 갈 거예요, 보다 → 볼 거예요. After most consonants, add 을 거예요: 먹다 → 먹을 거예요, 읽다 → 읽을 거예요.

When the stem already ends in ㄹ, do not add another ㄹ: 만들다 → 만들 거예요, 살다 → 살 거예요. Irregular verbs need separate study; check a reliable dictionary or lesson rather than forcing this three-line rule onto every stem.

Use a subject and time to make the plan clear

KoreanMeaningEvidence in the sentence
저는 내일 도서관에 갈 거예요.I am going to the library tomorrow.저 + 내일
주말에 친구를 만날 거예요.I am going to meet a friend on the weekend.주말에
오늘 저녁에 요리할 거예요.I am going to cook tonight.오늘 저녁에
다음 달부터 한국어를 배울 거예요.I will study Korean starting next month.다음 달부터

The form often sounds like an intention when the subject controls the action. A time phrase places the plan without changing the final predicate pattern.

Korean can omit 저는 when the speaker is obvious. Keep it in your first model, then remove it only when the conversation supplies the subject.

Let the subject and evidence shift the reading toward prediction

KoreanWorking meaningType
내일 비가 올 거예요.It will rain tomorrow.Prediction
길이 많이 막힐 거예요.The roads will be heavily congested.Prediction
민지는 곧 도착할 거예요.Minji will arrive soon.Expectation
저는 우산을 가져갈 거예요.I am going to take an umbrella.Intention

Rain and roads do not express personal intention, so the form is read as a prediction. With a person, context decides whether the sentence reports a plan, expectation or speaker inference.

Do not invent certainty. Add 아마 (“probably”) or use -(으)ㄹ 것 같아요 when the prediction is deliberately cautious.

Ask about the listener’s plan without supplying it

QuestionMeaningUseful answer
주말에 뭐 할 거예요?What are you going to do this weekend?집에서 쉴 거예요.
언제 출발할 거예요?When are you going to leave?오전 아홉 시에 출발할 거예요.
누구와 갈 거예요?Who are you going with?친구와 갈 거예요.
얼마나 있을 거예요?How long will you stay?삼 일 동안 있을 거예요.

The question word occupies the missing information slot, while 거예요? remains at the end. Answer with the requested type: activity, time, companion or duration.

A question about another person’s plan is not permission. Use a permission form such as 가도 돼요? when that is the real task.

Separate a decision not to act from inability or uncertainty

KoreanMeaningWhy it differs
내일은 안 갈 거예요.I am not going tomorrow.Negative plan
내일은 못 갈 것 같아요.I do not think I can go tomorrow.Likely inability
아직 결정하지 않았어요.I have not decided yet.No decision
아마 안 갈 거예요.I probably will not go.Prediction with limited certainty

안 갈 거예요 can state a negative intention. 못 갈 것 같아요 points to inability or difficulty and softens the forecast. 아직 결정하지 않았어요 is the honest answer when no plan exists.

Do not turn every uncertain answer into a firm yes or no. Preserve the speaker’s decision status.

Confirm activity, time and meeting place

SpeakerKoreanMeaning
Mina주말에 뭐 할 거예요?What are you going to do this weekend?
Alex친구와 한국어를 공부할 거예요.I am going to study Korean with a friend.
Mina언제 만날 거예요?When will you meet?
Alex토요일 오후 두 시에 만날 거예요.We are going to meet at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Mina어디에서 공부할 거예요?Where will you study?
Alex도서관에서 공부할 거예요.We are going to study at the library.
Mina토요일 두 시에 만나서 도서관에서 공부할 거죠?You will meet at two Saturday and study at the library, right?
Alex네, 맞아요.Yes, that is right.

The final confirmation combines the activity, day, time and action place. Each answer supplies the information requested by the previous question.

The dialogue is an original plan, not a real event. Change one field and make sure every later confirmation changes with it.

Choose form and meaning from the context

  1. Change 가다 to -(으)ㄹ 거예요.
  2. Change 먹다 and 만들다 to the same pattern.
  3. Build “I will go to the library tomorrow.”
  4. Why is 내일 비가 올 거예요 a prediction rather than intention?
  5. Ask what someone will do this weekend.
  6. Ask when someone will leave.
  7. Distinguish 안 갈 거예요 from 못 갈 것 같아요.
  8. In the dialogue, state the complete confirmed plan.
Check the answers and explanations
  1. 갈 거예요. The vowel-ending stem takes ㄹ 거예요.
  2. 먹을 거예요 and 만들 거예요. A consonant normally takes 을, while a stem ending in ㄹ does not add another ㄹ.
  3. 저는 내일 도서관에 갈 거예요. The time and destination come before the future predicate.
  4. Rain does not have personal intention; the speaker is predicting a future event.
  5. 주말에 뭐 할 거예요? 뭐 asks for the planned activity.
  6. 언제 출발할 거예요? 언제 asks for the departure time.
  7. 안 갈 거예요 can state a decision not to go; 못 갈 것 같아요 presents likely inability or difficulty.
  8. They will meet at 2 p.m. Saturday and study Korean at the library.

Write three cards: a plan you control, a prediction you do not control and an undecided situation. Use a different Korean answer for each instead of translating will mechanically.

A small listening check

Pronunciation help: Listen for time and final tense

내일 points forward and 할 거예요 marks the plan. 어제 and 공부했어요 place the alternative in the past.

Listen and choose

Play the sound, then select the Korean you heard. The answer buttons unlock after playback. This is one short practice item, not a pronunciation assessment.

Listen before choosing.
