Korean polite vs casual speech levels: 해요체, 해체 and 하십시오체

Compare three listener-facing styles, change endings consistently, and ask before moving from polite to casual Korean.

One verb form tells the listener how the sentence addresses them

You learn 가요, then hear 갑니다 in an announcement and 가 between close friends. All three can describe going, but they do not address the listener in the same style.

This intermediate lesson compares three useful speech styles: polite conversational 해요체, casual 해체 and formal polite 하십시오체. Korean grammar recognises additional speech levels; these three give learners a practical contrast, not the whole system.

Imagine asking a friend’s grandmother whether she has eaten. You remember 밥 먹었냐? from a drama. The question makes sense, but it sounds far too familiar for this situation. Try 식사하셨어요? instead: ‘Have you eaten?’

With a close friend who already uses casual speech with you, 밥 먹었어? can be perfectly ordinary. 먹었냐? also occurs between people who are close, but its tone can sound blunt. It is not a good default to copy when you are still getting to know someone.

Notice that adding 요 is only part of the choice. 먹었어요? addresses the listener politely; 드셨어요? also uses an honorific verb for the person who ate. Age, your relationship and the setting all matter. If you are unsure, start with polite speech and listen to how people address one another.

Keep meaning steady while the listener style changes

지금 가요.polite conversational
지금 가.casual
지금 갑니다.formal polite
The action stays “go now”; the ending changes the listener relationship and setting.

해요체 commonly ends in -아요/-어요 or 요-bearing forms. 해체 uses casual endings without 요. 하십시오체 uses formal endings such as -ㅂ니다/-습니다 and -ㅂ니까/-습니까.

Do not create casual speech by deleting every visible 요. Some forms change more: 먹어요 → 먹어, but 갑니다 → 가 requires choosing a different ending system.

Convert statements as complete units

Meaning해요체해체하십시오체
I go.가요.가.갑니다.
I eat.먹어요.먹어.먹습니다.
It is okay.괜찮아요.괜찮아.괜찮습니다.
I was busy.바빴어요.바빴어.바빴습니다.

The past marker remains while the ending changes: 바빴- plus the chosen listener style. Practise one tense across all three columns before mixing many verbs.

The English meaning does not show the Korean relationship. Add a situation label—friend, customer conversation or formal briefing—to every conversion exercise.

Questions keep the style contrast too

Meaning해요체해체하십시오체
Are you going?가요?가?갑니까?
Did you eat?먹었어요?먹었어?먹었습니까?
Is it okay?괜찮아요?괜찮아?괜찮습니까?
When do you begin?언제 시작해요?언제 시작해?언제 시작합니까?

In 해요체 and 해체, intonation and the question mark can distinguish a question from a statement with the same visible ending. 하십시오체 uses a distinct formal question ending in these examples.

Formal does not automatically mean warmer or more respectful in every interaction. It also marks an institutional or public setting. A natural service conversation may use 해요체 even when it remains polite.

Do not convert a request by sound alone

Purpose해요체해체하십시오체
Please wait.기다리세요.기다려.기다리십시오.
Please sit.앉으세요.앉아.앉으십시오.
Please look.보세요.봐.보십시오.
Please do not enter.들어가지 마세요.들어가지 마.들어가지 마십시오.

The casual column can sound direct or intimate depending on the relationship and tone. Do not use it with an unfamiliar person merely because the sentence is short.

Signs and announcements may use formal commands without representing a personal relationship. Read the function of the text as well as its ending.

Ask before changing to casual speech

KoreanMeaningWho controls the choice
말 편하게 하셔도 돼요.You may speak comfortably/casually.Speaker gives permission to the other person.
그럼 말 놓을까요?Then shall we speak casually? Both speakers can agree.
저도 반말해도 돼요?May I use casual speech too?Speaker asks permission.
아직은 존댓말이 편해요.I am still more comfortable with polite speech.Speaker keeps a boundary.

말을 놓다 means to move to non-honorific casual speech in this relationship context. 반말 refers broadly to non-honorific speech, while the exact ending can vary.

Permission is not permanent or transferable to every setting. Two friends may use casual speech privately and polite speech in a workplace meeting.

Separate speech level from respect inside the sentence

FeatureExampleWhat it marks
Listener style선생님이 와요.해요체 addresses the listener politely.
Subject honorific선생님이 오세요.시 honors the subject.
Honorific noun선생님이 진지를 드세요.진지/드시다 honor the referent.
Formal listener style선생님이 오십니다.시 plus 하십시오체.

와요 is polite toward the listener but does not contain the subject-honorific marker 시. 오세요 combines subject honorification with 해요체.

A learner can choose the correct listener ending and still need to revise a subject or recipient form. Review these layers separately instead of calling every change “formal Korean.”

Change style only after both speakers agree

SpeakerKoreanMeaning
Hana처음 뵙겠습니다. 저는 하나입니다.Nice to meet you. I am Hana.
Mina저는 민아예요. 만나서 반가워요.I am Mina. Nice to meet you.
Hana우리 동갑이네요. 말 편하게 하셔도 돼요.We are the same age. You may speak casually.
Mina고마워요. 그럼 서로 말 놓을까요?Thank you. Then shall we both speak casually?
Hana좋아. 다음에는 어디에서 만나?Great. Where shall we meet next time?
Mina학교 앞에서 만나.Let’s meet in front of the school.

The conversation moves from formal/polite forms to casual forms after an explicit exchange. Being the same age provides context in this fictional dialogue, but it does not force either person to change.

The first two lines mix 하십시오체 and 해요체 between speakers without communication failure. Real conversations can contain style choices by different speakers; the key is whether each choice fits the relationship and setting.

Keep tense, meaning and listener style separate

  1. Convert 가요 to 해체 and 하십시오체.
  2. Convert 먹었어요? to casual and formal-polite questions.
  3. Why is deleting 요 not a complete conversion rule?
  4. Give a polite conversational request to wait.
  5. Ask whether both speakers should move to casual speech.
  6. Keep a polite-speech boundary.
  7. Explain the difference between 선생님이 와요 and 선생님이 오세요.
  8. In the dialogue, what licenses the switch to casual endings?
Check the answers and explanations
  1. 가 and 갑니다. The lexical meaning stays “go,” while the listener style changes.
  2. 먹었어? and 먹었습니까? The past meaning remains in both.
  3. Some endings and contractions change as a system; 갑니다 does not become a natural casual form by deleting 요 because it has none.
  4. 기다리세요. It is a 해요체 request in this lesson.
  5. 그럼 서로 말 놓을까요? It proposes a mutual change rather than assuming one.
  6. 아직은 존댓말이 편해요. It states a preference without an accusation.
  7. 와요 uses a polite listener style. 오세요 also contains 시 and honors the subject.
  8. One speaker gives permission and the other asks for mutual agreement before both use casual forms.

Choose one four-line dialogue and rewrite it in 해요체, 해체 and 하십시오체. Keep the facts and tense unchanged. Add a setting label to explain which version you would actually use.
