Korean recycling vocabulary: ask the local day, place and sorting rule

Read common waste labels and ask the building or district for the current disposal day, place, time, bag and preparation rule.

Advanced22–26 min · local-rule reading practiceExplained in English

The useful phrase is the one that checks the local rule

A sign may show separate places for general waste, food waste, bottles and packaging, but the collection day or preparation rule can differ by district, neighborhood and building. Memorising one universal schedule can make confident Korean less accurate.

This advanced lesson teaches the Korean vocabulary used to ask where, when and how to dispose of an item. It does not replace the current notice from your accommodation, apartment management or district office.

The English title uses “recycling” because that is a common search word. In Korean, 분리배출 describes putting waste out by separated category, while 재활용 refers more broadly to recycling or reuse. The exact local label matters.

Keep the broad waste categories separate

일반 쓰레기general waste
음식물 쓰레기food waste
재활용품recyclable items
These are broad labels. A specific item may still need a local preparation rule.
Korean labelWorking meaningWhat to verify
일반 쓰레기General wasteDesignated bag and local disposal time
음식물 쓰레기Food wasteContainer, card or bag system and excluded materials
재활용품Recyclable itemsMaterial category and cleaning/preparation
대형 폐기물Bulky wasteReport, sticker or collection process
의류 수거함Clothing collection binAccepted items and condition

쓰레기 alone means waste or trash; it does not identify the disposal stream. 재활용품 names items handled as recyclable in the relevant system. Do not decide from the material name alone when the item is dirty, mixed or locally excluded.

Official Seoul living guidance says recyclable items are separated by material and put in the designated place, and that districts have their own collection days. Use those statements as reasons to check the current local system, not as a nationwide timetable.

Read common material labels on the sign

LabelWorking meaningUseful item word
종이Paper상자 — box
유리병Glass bottles병 — bottle
캔 / 금속Cans / metal캔 — can
플라스틱Plastic용기 — container
비닐Plastic film or bags in Korean sorting labels봉지 — bag
스티로폼Expanded polystyrene / foam packaging포장재 — packaging material

The English word “vinyl” can mislead learners: on Korean waste signs, 비닐 often labels flexible plastic film and bags. Read the pictured examples and local instructions instead of applying an English material category mechanically.

A package can combine paper, plastic film, a cap and residue. The printed recycling mark or material word is evidence, but the current local rule determines how you prepare and place it.

Ask five questions before disposal

QuestionMeaningRule it checks
이거 어디에 버려요?Where do I throw this away?Place or category
재활용품은 무슨 요일에 내놓아요?On what day do we put out recyclables?Day
몇 시부터 내놓을 수 있어요?From what time can we put it out?Time
지정된 봉투를 써야 해요?Do I need to use a designated bag?Container or bag
씻어서 버려야 해요?Do I need to wash it before throwing it away?Preparation

버리다 focuses on discarding. 내놓다 focuses on putting something out for collection. A person can know the category but still need the correct day and place.

무슨 요일 asks which day of the week. 몇 시부터 asks the earliest allowed time. Repeat the answer with the exact building or neighborhood so that a remembered rule from another address does not replace it.

Ask about parts, residue and mixed materials

KoreanMeaningDecision still needed
내용물을 비워야 해요?Do I need to empty the contents?Residue
물로 헹궈야 해요?Do I need to rinse it with water?Cleaning
라벨을 떼야 해요?Do I need to remove the label?Label
뚜껑은 따로 버려요?Do I dispose of the cap separately?Separate part
재질이 섞여 있는데 어떻게 버려요?The materials are mixed; how do I dispose of it?Mixed material

The endings -아/어야 해요? ask whether an action is required. They do not claim that the action applies everywhere. Keep the question mark in your intention even when your intonation is imperfect.

If a staff member points to a notice, ask 여기 규칙이 맞나요? (“Is this the rule here?”) and take a photo only when permitted. Update an old note when the building posts a new notice.

Recognise the language of notices

Notice formWorking meaningGrammar cue
깨끗이 씻어서 배출하세요.Wash it clean and put it out.-아서 links preparation and disposal
수거일 전날에 내놓지 마세요.Do not put it out the day before collection.-지 마세요 prohibits
지정 장소에만 배출해 주세요.Please put it out only at the designated place.-에만 limits place
일반 쓰레기와 분리해 주세요.Please separate it from general waste.-와 separates from
관리실에 문의하세요.Please ask the management office.문의하다 directs you to a source

A notice often omits the object because the heading or picture supplies it. Read the heading, image, date and exception together. 매주 화요일 means every Tuesday; 이번 주 화요일 means this Tuesday only.

Negative instructions can be visually small. Do not miss 금지 (“prohibited”), 불가 (“not allowed/available”) or -지 마세요.

Correct a mistake without defending the old rule

KoreanMeaningFunction
제가 잘못 버렸어요.I disposed of it incorrectly.Own the mistake
어디로 옮기면 될까요?Where should I move it?Ask for correction
다음부터는 규칙을 확인할게요.I will check the rule next time.Future action
이 안내문이 최신 내용인가요?Is this notice the latest information?Verify recency
제가 이해한 게 맞는지 확인할게요.I will check whether I understood correctly.Repeat back

-면 될까요? asks what action would be sufficient in this situation. It is useful when you need a practical correction rather than a long explanation.

Do not move hazardous, sharp or unknown waste based only on this language lesson. Ask the responsible local staff or public authority for the handling process.

Confirm day, place, time and preparation

SpeakerKoreanMeaning
Guest이 건물에서는 재활용품을 어디에 내놓아요?Where do we put out recyclables in this building?
Manager일 층 뒤쪽 분리배출 장소에 내놓으세요.Put them in the sorting area at the back of the first floor.
Guest무슨 요일에 몇 시부터 내놓을 수 있어요?On what day and from what time can I put them out?
Manager수요일 저녁 여덟 시부터 내놓을 수 있어요.You can put them out from 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
Guest플라스틱 용기는 씻고 라벨도 떼야 해요?Do I need to wash plastic containers and remove the labels too?
Manager이 안내문에 있는 준비 방법을 따라 주세요.Please follow the preparation method in this notice.
Guest그러면 수요일 여덟 시 이후에 이 장소로 가져오면 되는 거죠?Then I should bring them to this place after 8 on Wednesday, correct?

The schedule and building are invented for language practice. The guest asks for the actual place, day and start time, then repeats them back. The manager points to the local preparation notice instead of turning one spoken example into a universal rule.

-는 거죠? seeks confirmation of an interpretation. Use it after stating the full rule you think you heard, not as a substitute for listening to the correction.

Read a six-sentence change notice

Read an English translation

The recyclable collection place in our building is changing starting this week.

The old place was basement level one, but the new place is behind the building.

The disposal day remains Wednesday, and items cannot be put out before 8 p.m.

The contents must be emptied and the items separated by material as written in the notice.

For an item whose disposal method is uncertain, residents must first ask the management office.

Minsu deleted the old note and wrote down the new place and time.

The day does not change, but the place does. 그대로 preserves the Wednesday schedule; 바뀐다 changes the collection place. The negative phrase 전에는 내놓을 수 없다 means the 8 p.m. time is a lower boundary, not a deadline.

Use the sign and local answer together

  1. Explain the difference between 재활용 and 분리배출 in this lesson.
  2. Ask where to throw away this item.
  3. Ask which day recyclables are put out.
  4. Ask whether a designated bag is required.
  5. Ask how to dispose of an item made of mixed materials.
  6. A notice says 지정 장소에만 배출해 주세요. What restriction does 만 add?
  7. Why is “Wednesday at 8” from the dialogue not a rule for every building?
  8. In the reading, identify what stays the same, what changes and what time restriction applies.
Check the answers and explanations
  1. 재활용 is the broader idea of recycling or reuse; 분리배출 is putting waste out in separated categories under a collection system.
  2. 이거 어디에 버려요? The answer should identify the local category or place.
  3. 재활용품은 무슨 요일에 내놓아요? Use the answer only for the address being discussed.
  4. 지정된 봉투를 써야 해요? This asks about the local bag requirement without assuming one.
  5. 재질이 섞여 있는데 어떻게 버려요? Show the actual item or its material label when possible.
  6. 만 means “only”: disposal is requested only at the designated place, not merely somewhere near it.
  7. The dialogue is an invented language example, and official guidance says collection days can differ by district; buildings may also post their own place and preparation rules.
  8. Wednesday remains the disposal day. The place changes from basement level one to behind the building. Items cannot be put out before 8 p.m.

Photograph or copy the current notice for the address where you are staying, then turn its day, place, time, bag and preparation lines into five questions. Replace this lesson’s invented schedule with the verified local answer.
