Korean taxi guide: confirm your destination, pickup and drop-off
Practise Korean taxi conversations that separate where you are from where you are going, correct a destination, and confirm a workable drop-off point.
Give the driver information they can act on
“I am outside the hotel” and “Please take me to the hotel” contain the same landmark but describe different places in a taxi journey. One is where the driver should meet you. The other is where you want to go. A useful taxi conversation makes that difference explicit.
This intermediate Korean taxi guide focuses on understanding replies and correcting details. You will show a destination, explain a pickup location, distinguish a time estimate from a promise, and agree on a drop-off point. Basic request forms such as 주세요 will help; review directions in Korean if left, right and location words are new.
Keep the exact destination name and Korean address available to show. If a place has several branches, the name alone may leave an important question unanswered. The sample conversations below use invented locations and estimates for language practice.
Separate three places in the journey
어디에 계세요? uses the respectful 계세요 when asking where you are. It may come during a pickup call. 어디로 가세요? asks where you are going; the driver needs the destination. Hear the whole expression rather than replying to every 어디 question with the same place name.
Useful labels you may encounter are 출발지, the departure or pickup location, and 목적지, the destination. 도착지 is an arrival location. A booking service’s exact wording can differ, but the practical distinction remains: current position and intended arrival are separate pieces of information.
For a simple check before a ride, ask yourself: does the driver know where to meet me, and does the destination match the place I actually need? Correct a mismatch before treating the journey as settled.
Show the destination and confirm the detail that matters
| Your purpose | Korean | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Show an address | 이 주소로 가 주세요. | Please go to this address. |
| Choose the correct branch | 본점 말고 이 지점으로 가 주세요. | Please go to this branch, rather than the main branch. |
| Confirm a landmark | 도서관 옆에 있는 호텔 맞나요? | Is it the hotel next to the library? |
| Correct the selected place | 제가 목적지를 잘못 선택했어요. | I selected the wrong destination. |
이 주소로 refers to an address you are showing. The demonstrative 이 needs something identifiable in the conversation. Saying “this address” with no address visible leaves the driver to guess what you mean.
In 본점 말고 이 지점으로 가 주세요, 말고 rejects one choice and supplies another. It is more useful than simply saying 아니요 and repeating “hotel.” Point to the correct branch’s full name and address while making the correction.
If the destination was entered incorrectly in a booking app, say so and confirm how the correction will be handled. Do not assume that a spoken request has updated the booking or its displayed estimate. App interfaces and rules vary; this lesson teaches the conversation, while the service’s own instructions govern the booking.
When you are unsure, use a full confirmation question. 맞나요? means “Is that right?” but naming the hotel beside the library tells the driver exactly what you are checking.
Describe your position relative to a visible landmark
| Speaker | Korean | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Driver | 지금 어디에 계세요? | Where are you now? |
| Passenger | 도서관 정문 앞에 있어요. | I am in front of the library’s main entrance. |
| Driver | 길 건너편에 계세요? | Are you on the other side of the road? |
| Passenger | 아니요, 도서관 쪽에 있어요. | No, I am on the library side. |
| Passenger | 파란 가방을 들고 있어요. | I am carrying a blue bag. |
| Driver | 네, 찾았어요. | Yes, I found you. |
This invented pickup exchange narrows the location in stages: main entrance, side of the road, visible bag. The passenger answers the driver’s actual question before adding a distinguishing detail. A bag colour on its own would not explain which side of the road the passenger is on.
건너편 means the other side or opposite side; 쪽 means a side or direction. These words depend on a reference point. “The library side” is clearer than “my side” when the people are looking from different positions.
Do not cross a road just because you think a short question was an instruction to move. If a different pickup point is needed, ask the driver to specify it, then use a lawful pedestrian route. The language task is to resolve the location before acting on an uncertain instruction.
Practise by changing the main entrance to a side entrance and the blue bag to a red bag. Keep the rest of the information consistent. The listener should be able to identify the new meeting point from the revised exchange.
Ask about travel time without turning an estimate into a guarantee
| Korean | Meaning | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 여기까지 얼마나 걸릴까요? | About how long will it take to get here? | It does not tell the driver where “here” is unless you show or identify it. |
| 차가 막혀서 시간이 더 걸릴 수 있어요. | Traffic is heavy, so it may take longer. | It does not state a precise arrival time. |
| 삼십 분 정도 걸릴 것 같아요. | I think it will take about thirty minutes. | It is an estimate, not a guaranteed thirty-minute trip. |
정도 gives an approximate amount. 것 같아요 presents an assessment rather than certainty. In the third sentence, both matter: the speaker is estimating roughly thirty minutes. If you need to catch something at a fixed time, preserve that uncertainty instead of hearing only 삼십 분.
걸릴 수 있어요 means it may take that amount of time or may take longer in the given sentence. A possibility is different from a confirmed delay of a specific length. Reply with a relevant question if the answer is too vague for your decision.
Actual fares and estimates depend on the journey and service. VISITKOREA’s official taxi overview describes variations by place, taxi type and additional charges. Use current official or booking information for costs; the numbers in this lesson are invented listening material.
Request a stop, then listen for an alternative
| Speaker | Korean | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Passenger | 호텔 정문 앞에서 내려 주세요. | Please drop me off in front of the hotel’s main entrance. |
| Driver | 여기는 차를 세울 수 없어요. | I cannot stop the car here. |
| Driver | 조금 앞에서 내려 드려도 될까요? | Would it be okay to drop you off a little farther ahead? |
| Passenger | 네, 안전한 곳에 세워 주세요. | Yes, please stop somewhere safe. |
| Passenger | 여기서 내릴게요. 감사합니다. | I will get out here. Thank you. |
내려 주세요 asks the driver to let you out; 세워 주세요 asks the driver to stop the vehicle. In a taxi, both can serve a drop-off request, but they focus on different actions. 내려 드려도 될까요? is the driver’s courteous request to use an alternative drop-off point.
The passenger’s original preference is the main entrance. The driver’s reply says that exact spot is not available for stopping. Repeating the entrance request more loudly does not solve the problem; respond to the proposed alternative and let the driver choose a safe, permitted stopping place.
내릴게요 expresses your intention to get out. It is not a signal to open the door while the car is moving. Wait for the stop before getting out. For practice, explain in English which location was requested first and why the actual drop-off changed.
Close the ride with a clear payment question
If you need to confirm a payment method, ask 카드로 결제해도 돼요? — “May I pay by card?” For a receipt, use 영수증 부탁드려요. — “A receipt, please.” These expressions also appear in other transactions, so learn the purpose rather than treating them as special taxi grammar.
If you booked a ride with payment arranged in an app, establish whether payment is already handled there before offering another payment. A useful clarification is 앱에서 결제되는 건가요? — “Is the payment handled in the app?” Listen to the reply and check the service’s displayed information. This question does not imply that every booking uses automatic payment.

Respond to the information, not just the script
- The driver asks 어디에 계세요? during pickup. Should you give your current position or the destination?
- Your destination has a main branch and a smaller branch. What information should accompany 이 지점으로 가 주세요?
- Translate the contrast in 도서관 쪽에 있어요 rather than 길 건너편에 있어요.
- The driver says 삼십 분 정도 걸릴 것 같아요. Which two parts mark uncertainty or approximation?
- The driver says 여기는 차를 세울 수 없어요. Does the driver agree to stop exactly where you requested?
- What is the difference between 세워 주세요 and 내릴게요?
- You may have prepaid through an app. Write a question to clarify where payment is handled.
- You selected the wrong destination. Write a short correction and explain one thing to confirm afterwards.
Check the answers and explanations
- Give your current position, such as 도서관 정문 앞에 있어요. The question asks where to find you.
- Show the correct branch name and full address. “This branch” needs an identifiable destination, not just a vague hotel name.
- It means you are on the library side, not on the other side of the road. The landmark defines the side.
- 정도 means approximately, and 것 같아요 marks the speaker’s estimate. Thirty minutes is not promised.
- No. The driver says that stopping there is not possible. Listen for or ask about a workable alternative.
- 세워 주세요 asks the driver to stop the vehicle. 내릴게요 states your intention to get out once it has stopped.
- 앱에서 결제되는 건가요? — Is the payment handled in the app? Check the answer and booking information before paying again.
- 제가 목적지를 잘못 선택했어요. Then show the correct destination and confirm how the change will be handled, including the booking if relevant.
Now rehearse a complete journey with a partner: one pickup clarification, one destination confirmation and one change to the drop-off point. Ask your partner to change a detail on purpose. Your task is to notice it and respond accurately.
A small listening check
Pronunciation help: Hear the ending that gives the location its role
있어요 says where someone is. 가 주세요 asks for movement to a place. Keep listening after 도서관 정문 so that the shared landmark does not hide the different request.
Listen and choose
Play the sound, then select the Korean you heard. The answer buttons unlock after playback. This is one short practice item, not a pronunciation assessment.
Listen before choosing.
