Luggage storage Korean: confirm hours, size limits and pickup proof
Read a storage notice, separate drop-off from pickup, and confirm time, restrictions, proof and extra charges.
“Storage available” does not tell you the conditions
You see 짐 보관 near a station and walk to the counter. The service exists, but you still do not know the closing time, size limit, prohibited contents, pickup proof or what happens after the agreed time.
This advanced lesson turns “Luggage storage services in Seoul” into a Korean reading and confirmation task. You will distinguish leaving an item from retrieving it, read a fictional condition notice and restate the agreement before walking away.
Locations, hours, prices, eligible items, delivery options and procedures change by operator. Check the current official page and the notice at the service you use. No price or operating hour in the fictional practice is a real recommendation.
Separate storage, drop-off and retrieval
짐을 맡겨요 describes the customer leaving luggage with a service. 직원이 짐을 보관해요 describes the service keeping it. Later, the customer says 짐을 찾으러 왔어요 — “I came to pick up my luggage.”
찾다 can also mean to look for something. The construction 찾으러 왔어요, combined with a receipt or storage context, gives the retrieval meaning.
Ask six questions before drop-off
| Condition | Korean question | Decision supplied by the answer |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | 오늘 보관할 수 있어요? | Whether the service can accept it today |
| Closing/pickup | 몇 시까지 찾으러 와야 해요? | Latest required pickup time |
| Size | 이 크기도 맡길 수 있어요? | Whether this item fits the rule |
| Contents | 보관하면 안 되는 물건이 있어요? | Prohibited items |
| Proof | 찾을 때 무엇을 보여 줘야 해요? | Receipt, code or identification requirement |
| Late charge | 시간을 넘기면 추가 요금이 있어요? | Consequence of exceeding the agreed time |
몇 시까지 asks for a deadline. It is different from 몇 시간 동안, which asks for duration. A service that stores an item for four hours might still require pickup before a separate closing time.
-아/어야 해요 asks or states what is required. Use the operator’s reply, written terms and receipt together; do not infer a condition from a generic storage sign.
Read a fictional condition notice without treating it as a real service
| Fictional sign | Working meaning | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| 운영 시간: 오전 아홉 시–오후 여덟 시 | Operating hours: 9 a.m.–8 p.m. | Is pickup allowed until closing or earlier? |
| 당일 수령 | Same-day pickup | What date and cutoff define same day? |
| 귀중품 보관 불가 | Valuables cannot be stored | What the operator classifies as valuables |
| 영수증 분실 시 본인 확인 | Identity check if the receipt is lost | Accepted identification procedure |
| 시간 초과 시 추가 요금 | Extra charge after the time limit | Rate and unit shown by the real service |
Every condition in this table is invented for language practice. The colon labels a category, 불가 means not permitted or unavailable, 분실 시 means in the event of loss, and 초과 시 means when a limit is exceeded.
Short notices omit particles and sentence endings. Expand them to confirm: 당일에 찾아야 해요?, 귀중품은 맡길 수 없어요?, 추가 요금은 어떻게 계산해요?
Describe the luggage precisely
| Detail | Korean | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Count | 가방 두 개 | two bags |
| Size | 큰 여행 가방 한 개 | one large suitcase |
| Feature | 바퀴가 달린 가방 | a wheeled bag |
| Fragile contents | 깨지기 쉬운 물건이 들어 있어요. | There is a fragile item inside. |
| Ownership marker | 제 이름표가 붙어 있어요. | My name tag is attached. |
Counters help connect an item to the receipt. 개 is a general counter; a service may use its own size classes. Describe the object, then let the operator decide which class applies.
Do not assume that a warning makes a prohibited item acceptable. 깨지기 쉬운 물건도 맡길 수 있어요? asks permission first. If the answer is no, choose another safe arrangement.
Restate the agreement before leaving
| Staff information | Customer confirmation | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 오늘 여섯 시까지 찾으러 오세요. | 오늘 저녁 여섯 시까지 찾으면 되죠? | I should pick it up by 6 p.m. today, right? |
| 이 영수증을 보여 주세요. | 찾을 때 이 영수증이 필요하죠? | I need this receipt at pickup, right? |
| 가방 두 개로 접수했습니다. | 가방 두 개가 맞아요. | Two bags is correct. |
| 귀중품은 보관할 수 없습니다. | 귀중품은 제가 가지고 갈게요. | I will keep the valuables with me. |
-으면 되죠? checks that an action will satisfy the condition. 필요하죠? confirms a required item. The customer repeats the date, time, count and proof instead of answering every condition with 네.
접수했습니다 means the service has received or registered the items in this context. Compare the receipt immediately with the actual count and identifying details.
At pickup, identify the transaction and check the item
| Move | Korean | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| State purpose | 짐을 찾으러 왔어요. | Say that you came to retrieve luggage. |
| Present proof | 여기 영수증과 신분증이 있어요. | Provide the requested proof. |
| Confirm count | 가방이 두 개 맞나요? | Check that two bags are returned. |
| Report a difference | 이 가방은 제 것이 아니에요. | Reject an incorrect bag. |
| Check damage | 맡길 때 없던 흠집이 있어요. | Report a mark that was not present at drop-off. |
Inspect the returned item before leaving when the service procedure allows it. 제 것이 아니에요 rejects ownership clearly. 맡길 때 없던 connects a condition to the earlier handover without claiming who caused it.
For a serious mismatch or unresolved tourist-service problem, preserve the receipt and follow the operator’s complaint procedure. The official Korea Tourism Organization 1330 page lists tourist information, interpretation and complaint channels; check its current contact options.
Confirm a fictional same-day storage transaction
| Speaker | Korean | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Traveler | 가방 두 개를 오늘 보관할 수 있어요? | Can you store two bags today? |
| Staff | 네. 저녁 여섯 시까지 찾으러 오셔야 해요. | Yes. You need to return for them by 6 p.m. |
| Traveler | 큰 여행 가방도 맡길 수 있어요? | Can I leave a large suitcase too? |
| Staff | 크기를 먼저 확인하겠습니다. 귀중품은 꺼내 주세요. | I will check the size first. Please remove valuables. |
| Traveler | 네. 찾을 때 무엇을 보여 줘야 해요? | Okay. What do I need to show at pickup? |
| Staff | 이 영수증을 보여 주세요. 가방 두 개로 접수했습니다. | Show this receipt. I have registered two bags. |
| Traveler | 가방 두 개를 맡기고 오늘 저녁 여섯 시까지 찾으러 오면 되죠? 찾을 때는 이 영수증을 보여 드리고요. | I am leaving two bags and should return by 6 p.m. today, right? At pickup, I show you this receipt. |
| Staff | 네, 맞습니다. | Yes, that is correct. |
The traveler does not treat “yes” as the complete agreement. The final line restates the deadline, count and proof. The staff checks size rather than promising that every large suitcase qualifies.
This transaction is fictional. Replace every time, rule and required document with the information supplied by the real operator.
Read a six-sentence notice problem
Read an English translation
Yujin wanted to leave two suitcases at a luggage-storage counter inside a station.
The notice said same-day pickup, but the exact cutoff time was not visible.
Yujin asked the employee whether the closing time and the required luggage-pickup time were the same.
The employee explained that the counter closed at 8 p.m. but the luggage had to be collected by 7:30 p.m.
Yujin reconfirmed the requirement to show the receipt and the number of bags.
That prevented Yujin from guessing the pickup cutoff incorrectly based only on the operating hours.
The invented passage separates three time concepts: same day, operating hours and pickup cutoff. Only the employee’s reply connects the fictional transaction to 7:30 p.m.
Extract every condition before you agree
- Distinguish 짐을 맡기다, 짐을 보관하다 and 짐을 찾다.
- Ask for the latest required pickup time.
- Why is 몇 시간 동안 different from 몇 시까지?
- Expand 귀중품 보관 불가 into a confirmation question.
- Ask whether a fragile item may be left.
- The staff registers two bags and asks for a receipt at pickup. Restate both conditions.
- In the reading, why would the 8 p.m. closing time produce a wrong assumption?
- At pickup, clearly say that the returned bag is not yours.
Check the answers and explanations

Pronunciation help: Pair each number with its noun
두 개 counts the bags; 여섯 시 gives the pickup time. Keep the two quantities separate.
