Order delivery food in Korean: clear requests and delivery updates
Read delivery and pickup options, distinguish food requests from handoff instructions, and explain an order problem with precise Korean.
Make the order understandable to the person handling it
You have chosen dinner, but the conversation is not over. The restaurant may need to confirm an option, and the delivery person may need to find the agreed entrance. “Please change it” is difficult to act on if nobody knows which detail you mean.
This intermediate lesson develops the Korean for those exchanges: choosing delivery or collection, making one clear request, understanding an update and describing a missing item. The setting is an invented order delivered to a guesthouse whose staff have agreed to a handoff at the front entrance. Use the actual rules and delivery arrangements of your own accommodation.
Before placing a real order, check that the service accepts your delivery address, contact details and payment method. Menus, availability and account requirements vary. The language below helps you communicate after those basics are established. Review food ordering and payment phrases if you need more preparation.
Read the collection method before checking the food
| Korean | Meaning in an order | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 배달 | Delivery | The destination and agreed way to receive the food. |
| 포장 | Takeout; food packed to go | In a pickup option, where and when you collect it. |
| 배달 주소 | Delivery address | The address attached to this particular order. |
| 요청 사항 | Requests; special instructions | Who receives the request and whether it can be followed. |
| 주문 내역 | Order details | The items, quantities and options you actually ordered. |
| 주문 번호 | Order number | The reference that helps identify the order when you contact support. |
배달 means bringing an item to its destination. 포장 refers to packing; in a restaurant ordering context, a 포장 option commonly means food to collect and take away. Read the surrounding instructions rather than assuming the packaging word itself promises transport to your accommodation.
A useful opening question is 이 주소로 배달 가능해요? — “Can you deliver to this address?” If you plan to collect the order yourself, you can say 직접 가지러 갈게요. — “I will come to pick it up myself.” Those two plans give different people the job of travelling with the food.
Keep the delivery destination in the appropriate address field or confirm it directly with the service. A note saying “I am somewhere else now” may not update the address attached to an order. If a detail is wrong, contact the service and confirm what change is possible before assuming the order has been redirected.
Separate a food request from a handoff instruction
| Your purpose | Korean | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Separate one component | 소스는 따로 주세요. | Please pack the sauce separately. |
| Request an omission | 양파는 빼 주세요. | Please leave out the onion. |
| Confirm whether that is possible | 그렇게 준비할 수 있어요? | Can you prepare it that way? |
| State where you will receive the food | 정문 앞에서 받을게요. | I will receive it in front of the main entrance. |
| Request contact upon arrival | 도착하면 연락해 주세요. | Please contact me when you arrive. |
따로 means separately. In 소스는 따로 주세요, the sauce is still requested; you want it packed apart from the food. 빼 주세요 asks for something to be left out. The two requests are not interchangeable.
In the first two sentences, 는 highlights the part of the meal you are talking about. That makes a short request easier to follow: sauce separately, onion omitted. Avoid combining several contradictory instructions in the same note. If the order already has a relevant option selector, check that your selection and written request agree.
A written preference is a request, not confirmation that a kitchen can make the change. If an ingredient matters for an allergy, communicate that explicitly and get reliable ingredient and preparation information before deciding whether to eat the food. Merely writing “leave out onion” does not establish that the dish is safe for a particular allergy.
For the handoff, choose a place you and the delivery person can both identify and use. 정문 means the main entrance; 문 앞 just means in front of a door. In a building with several doors, naming the main entrance or confirming another exact meeting point is more useful than an unexplained “here.”
Understand the stage described by an update
| Example wording | Meaning | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 주문이 접수됐어요. | The order has been received. | It does not say the food has arrived. |
| 음식을 준비하고 있어요. | The food is being prepared. | It does not say preparation is finished. |
| 지금 배달 중이에요. | The delivery is in progress. | It does not give an exact arrival time. |
| 배달이 완료됐어요. | Delivery has been completed. | If you have not found it, you still need to check the handoff details. |
These are language examples, not a reproduction of one app’s current status screen. You may encounter shorter labels or different wording. Identify the action being described before deciding what has happened.
접수 concerns receiving the order or request. 완료 concerns finishing the named task. The noun before 완료 matters: 주문 접수 완료 means the order-receiving step is complete; 배달 완료 says the delivery step is complete. Seeing 완료 somewhere in a message is not enough to conclude that dinner is at your door.
중 means that something is in progress in expressions such as 배달 중. The verb pattern -고 있어요 can also describe an ongoing activity, as in 준비하고 있어요. When listening, keep going through the ending instead of stopping as soon as you hear the familiar noun 음식.
To ask about timing, use 얼마나 더 기다리면 돼요? — “How much longer should I wait?” An answer such as 십 분 정도 더 걸려요. means “It will take about ten more minutes.” 정도 marks an approximation. Do not turn that estimate into an exact promise when passing the message to a friend.
Confirm the entrance during a short call
| Speaker | Korean | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery person | 정문 앞에 도착했어요. | I have arrived in front of the main entrance. |
| Customer | 지금 내려갈게요. | I will come down now. |
| Delivery person | 안쪽으로 들어가면 돼요? | Should I go inside? |
| Customer | 아니요, 제가 밖으로 나갈게요. | No, I will come outside. |
| Customer | 정문 앞에서 잠깐 기다려 주세요. | Please wait a moment at the main entrance. |
| Delivery person | 네, 여기서 기다릴게요. | Okay, I will wait here. |
The two people confirm who will move. 내려갈게요 describes the customer’s next action. 들어가면 돼요? asks whether the delivery person should enter. The customer replies that they will go outside, so the agreed plan is to meet at the entrance.
Listen for 안쪽 and 밖. These point in opposite directions in this exchange. If you hear only the verb 가다, you can miss the difference between someone coming inside and someone going outside. The final waiting request makes the meeting point explicit.
This dialogue assumes the guesthouse permits that arrangement and the customer is ready to receive the food. It does not authorise access to every building. For practice, change only one detail: meet at an agreed lobby instead. Rewrite the place and movement lines so they remain consistent, rather than changing 정문 to 로비 while leaving “I will come outside” unchanged.
Report the item or mismatch you can identify
| Situation | Korean | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| One ordered drink is absent | 주문한 음료가 안 왔어요. | The drink I ordered did not arrive. |
| A delivered item differs from the order | 주문한 메뉴와 다른 음식이 왔어요. | Food different from what I ordered arrived. |
| The status and your situation disagree | 배달 완료라고 나오는데 음식을 못 받았어요. | It says delivery is complete, but I have not received the food. |
| You need the service to check the order | 주문 내역을 확인해 주세요. | Please check the order details. |
Start with the order details, then name the specific problem. If two rice bowls arrived but a drink is missing, saying “The whole order never came” gives an inaccurate account. 주문한 음료가 안 왔어요 isolates the missing item.
When speaking to the service handling the order, use its order reference and answer any relevant verification questions through the appropriate channel. Keep your explanation factual. A missing drink does not tell you who caused the omission, and a completed status does not by itself explain where the food was left.
A useful follow-up is 어떻게 처리되는지 알려 주세요. — “Please tell me how this will be handled.” Then listen for the specific proposed action. Do not assume a replacement, cancellation or refund has been agreed simply because you reported the problem.
For a longer practice round, write an order card with two menu items, one drink and one sauce request. Have a partner change the delivered contents. Identify only the changed detail, ask for a check, and restate the actual response. That sequence tests whether you can use the vocabulary when the expected script changes.
Check the request, the stage and the next action
- In an ordering context, how do 배달 and a 포장 pickup option differ?
- Does 소스는 따로 주세요 ask the kitchen to omit the sauce?
- Who needs the information in 정문 앞에서 받을게요: the person preparing an ingredient or the person arranging the handoff?
- A message says 주문 접수 완료. Does it establish that delivery is complete?
- What does 정도 contribute to 십 분 정도 더 걸려요?
- In the call, the customer says 제가 밖으로 나갈게요. Who moves, and in which direction?
- Two meals arrive, but the ordered drink does not. Give a specific Korean problem report.
- A service has heard your complaint but has not explained a solution. Ask what happens next without claiming a refund has been promised.
Check the answers and explanations
- 배달 brings the order to the agreed destination. A 포장 pickup option involves collecting packed food yourself; read the actual option instructions.
- No. 따로 asks for the sauce separately. An omission request uses a different expression, such as 소스는 빼 주세요.
- The person arranging or carrying out the handoff. The sentence identifies where you will receive the order.
- No. The receiving or registration of the order is complete. The named task is 주문 접수, not 배달.
- It makes the time approximate: about ten more minutes. The sentence does not give an exact guaranteed arrival time.
- The customer, 제가, will go outside. The delivery person should not infer that they have been told to enter.
- 주문한 음료가 안 왔어요. It reports the missing drink without incorrectly saying that none of the food arrived.
- 어떻게 처리되는지 알려 주세요. Ask for the process or proposed action, then confirm the actual reply.
A small listening check
Pronunciation help: Keep the negative with the delivery report
Listen through the end of the sentence. The small word 안 changes whether the ordered drink arrived; do not decide from 음료 alone.
Listen and choose
Play the sound, then select the Korean you heard. The answer buttons unlock after playback. This is one short practice item, not a pronunciation assessment.
Listen before choosing.

Practise a second exchange in which the customer has already come outside but is at the wrong entrance. Use direction phrases to clarify the location and phone Korean to keep the call clear. Change the meeting point only after both people understand the new plan.
