Korean vegetarian and vegan restaurant phrases: ask about exact ingredients
State what you eat, ask about broth and seasoning, and confirm preparation without treating a menu label as a guarantee.
A category label does not answer an ingredient question
A menu marks a dish as vegetables, but the description does not mention the broth or seasoning. Saying only 채식이에요? may produce a different interpretation from the ingredients you personally avoid.
This intermediate lesson teaches Korean vegetarian and vegan restaurant phrases. You will state a dietary pattern, name exact ingredients, ask about broth and preparation, and repeat the answer before ordering.
Recipes, sauces, garnishes, kitchen practices and menu labels vary. Ask the current restaurant. This language lesson cannot certify a dish, prevent cross-contact or replace medical allergy advice.
Use a label, then explain the ingredients that matter
채식주의자 is a person who follows a vegetarian diet. 비건 is used as a loanword, but a restaurant may still need the ingredient list.
People use dietary labels differently. Name the foods relevant to you instead of assuming the label supplies the same rule to every listener.
Ask beyond the visible main ingredient
| Korean | Meaning | Why ask |
|---|---|---|
| 고기가 들어가요? | Does it contain meat? | Visible or hidden meat |
| 육수는 무엇으로 만들어요? | What is the broth made from? | Base ingredient |
| 생선이나 해산물이 들어가요? | Does it contain fish or seafood? | Seafood ingredient |
| 젓갈을 사용해요? | Do you use salted/fermented seafood seasoning? | Seasoning |
| 달걀이나 우유가 들어가요? | Does it contain egg or milk? | Animal-derived ingredient |
들어가다 means to be included as an ingredient in this context. 무엇으로 만들어요? asks what material or ingredient is used to make something.
Do not infer the answer from the dish name, color or garnish. Ask about the recipe used now.
Separate removing a topping from changing the whole recipe
| Request | Meaning | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| 고기는 빼 주세요. | Please leave out the meat. | Works only if it can be removed before serving. |
| 육수도 채소로 만들 수 있어요? | Can the broth also be made with vegetables? | Requires a recipe change. |
| 같은 조리 도구를 사용해요? | Do you use the same cooking utensils? | Cross-contact question |
| 따로 조리할 수 있어요? | Can you prepare it separately? | Kitchen capability |
| 변경할 수 없으면 알려 주세요. | Please tell me if it cannot be changed. | Invites a clear refusal |
Removing a visible topping does not change a broth or sauce already prepared. Ask about each layer that matters.
A restaurant may be unable to alter a batch recipe or separate equipment. Accept a clear no and choose another option rather than treating the request as a guarantee.
Interpret the reply before ordering
| Reply | Meaning | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| 고기는 없지만 멸치 육수를 사용해요. | There is no meat, but we use anchovy broth. | Not suitable for someone avoiding fish. |
| 달걀은 빼 드릴 수 있어요. | We can leave out the egg for you. | One change is possible. |
| 양념에 젓갈이 들어가요. | The seasoning contains fermented seafood. | Hidden ingredient identified. |
| 같은 팬을 사용합니다. | We use the same pan. | Cross-contact information. |
| 정확히 확인해 볼게요. | I will check exactly. | Answer is pending. |
Keep listening after 없지만. The clause after 지만 can add an ingredient that changes the decision.
확인해 볼게요 is a promise to check, not a completed confirmation. Wait for the result before ordering if the answer matters.
Use precise allergy language, then follow professional guidance
| Korean | Meaning | Use |
|---|---|---|
| 이 재료에 알레르기가 있어요. | I am allergic to this ingredient. | Name the exact ingredient. |
| 조금만 들어가도 먹을 수 없어요. | I cannot eat it even if only a little is included. | Severity boundary |
| 성분표를 확인할 수 있어요? | Can I check the ingredient list? | Packaged or documented information |
| 확실하지 않으면 주문하지 않을게요. | If it is not certain, I will not order. | Safe personal decision |
An allergy is a medical concern, not a preference label. Name the ingredient and severity using guidance appropriate to your condition. Translation can still fail, and kitchens may have cross-contact.
For severe allergies, use a professionally prepared translation card and medical advice. The phrases here help ask questions but cannot make an unsafe dish safe.
Wait for the broth and seasoning answer
| Speaker | Korean | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Customer | 저는 고기와 해산물을 먹지 않아요. 이 국수에 들어가요? | I do not eat meat or seafood. Are they in these noodles? |
| Staff | 고기는 없지만 육수에 멸치가 들어가요. | There is no meat, but the broth contains anchovy. |
| Customer | 멸치 육수 없이 만들 수 있어요? | Can you make it without anchovy broth? |
| Staff | 육수는 미리 만들어서 바꿀 수 없어요. | The broth is made in advance, so we cannot change it. |
| Customer | 그럼 채소로만 만든 다른 음식이 있어요? | Then is there another dish made only with vegetables? |
| Staff | 하나 있어요. 양념도 확인해 볼게요. | There is one. I will check the seasoning too. |
| Customer | 네, 양념까지 확인한 뒤에 주문할게요. | Okay. I will order after the seasoning is checked too. |
The customer does not order after hearing “no meat.” The anchovy broth changes the answer, and the seasoning check remains pending.
The recipe and availability are fictional. A real kitchen supplies the current answer.
Turn a diet label into checkable ingredient questions
- Say that you are vegan and list four animal-derived foods you do not eat.
- Ask what the broth is made from.
- Ask whether fermented seafood seasoning is used.
- Why is 고기는 빼 주세요 insufficient when broth is already prepared?
- Ask whether the same cooking utensils are used.
- The staff says 정확히 확인해 볼게요. Is the dish confirmed?
- State that you cannot eat even a small amount of one allergen.
- In the dialogue, why does the customer wait before ordering the alternative?
Check the answers and explanations
- 저는 비건이에요. 고기, 생선, 달걀, 우유를 먹지 않아요. Change the list to your actual boundary.
- 육수는 무엇으로 만들어요? It asks about the base rather than the visible topping.
- 젓갈을 사용해요? The restaurant must answer for the current recipe.
- Removing meat cannot remove an animal-based broth or sauce already in the dish.
- 같은 조리 도구를 사용해요? It asks about preparation and possible cross-contact.
- No. The staff has promised to check; the result is still pending.
- For example: 땅콩은 조금만 들어가도 먹을 수 없어요. Name the actual allergen accurately.
- The staff still needs to check the seasoning, which may contain an avoided ingredient.
Make one personal ingredient card with three columns: do not eat, need to ask, acceptable. Practise changing the questions when broth, sauce and cooking tools give different answers.
A small listening check
Pronunciation help: Track items before and after 지만
The foods before 안 먹지만 are avoided; the food before 먹어요 is included.
Listen and choose
Play the sound, then select the Korean you heard. The answer buttons unlock after playback. This is one short practice item, not a pronunciation assessment.
Listen before choosing.
